Following its cancellation last year, the event will be larger than years prior + feature both in-person and online events for everyone to participate in the festivities.

• Family-Friendly Online Paper Lantern Creation Workshop | Fri., April 16-Sun., April 18 | Any time | Virtual | Free | This online event is available any time on YouTube here and will teach you (and the kids) how to make gorgeous paper lanterns with supplies at home.
• Art Gallery Crawl | Fri., April 16 | 5-9 p.m. | The Vista + virtual | Free | Make your way through local galleries, listen to live music, and take advantage of local business’ specials (like a complimentary shave at No Grease Barber Shop + a discount at Craft Axe Throwing). Virtual gallery tours are also available.
• Art Day | Sat., April 17 | 10 a.m.-3 p.m. | Stormwater Studios, Lewis + Clark, and One Eared Cow | Free | The second day of the event will welcome visitors into gallery spaces to explore collections + view demonstrations. The COMET’s Soda Cap Connector will offer a free route to Stormwater Studios from the Vista and food + drink will be available for purchase.
• Crafty Feast | Sun., April 18 | 11 a.m.-3 p.m. | Corner of Lincoln and Lady | Free | Shop for one-of-a-kind gifts from local, indie vendors. The outdoor event will feature a beer wagon and the first 25 entrants will receive a free Crafty Feast tote bag.
• Live on Lincoln | Sun., April 18 | 5-7 p.m. | 1200 Lincoln St. | $160+ | The finale of the weekend’s events will feature a dinner from Blue Marlin and live entertainment from local organizations, including the South Carolina Philharmonic, Columbia Classical Ballet, and more. Tickets are sold in tables of 2 and 4. |

○ Lexington County passed a moratorium — which will temporarily halt development — on residential subdivisions larger than 10 lots (neighborhoods and apartment complexes) in unincorporated areas of the county. The moratorium will last 180 days, will only affect projects that haven’t begun the formal application process + is intended to help the county catch up with the population influx. 🏘️ (Post and Courier)

○ Yesterday, Gov. Henry McMaster announced a $10.5 million investment into public charter schools + the state’s workforce development efforts through the GEER fund. The charter school funds will be allocated based on enrollment numbers and workforce development funds will establish the South Carolina Workforce Journey’s initiative. 💰

○ Lexington School District One will hold its high school graduation ceremonies at the schools’ respective football stadiums in June due to capacity limitations at the Colonial Life Arena. Students will receive at least 4 graduation tickets. 🎓 (The State)

○ Allen University received a $100,000 award from Palmetto Citizens Federal Credit Union to assist with the renovation of the Good Samaritan-Waverly Hospital. Upon its completion, Palmetto Citizens Federal Credit Union Welcome Center will welcome visitors to the hospital. (Soda City BizWire)

○ $65,000. The amount in Samsung technology that Richland School District Two’s Student Innovation Center won as 1 of 10 national finalists in the annual Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest. The technology and supplies will support their COVID contact tracing project. 🖥️ (Cola Daily)

○ Next week, Major League Fishing is making its way to Lake Murray for the MLF Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit. The tournament will take place April 22-25 and participants will compete for a total purse of more than $900,000. Fans will not be allowed in person but are encouraged to keep up with the event here. 🎣

○ If you’ve been on Main Street recently, you’ve probably seen the progress local artist Ija Charles is making on her mural to represent Black Wall Street. According to Experience Columbia, when she’s finished with her current project, she’s headed to Five Points to create a piece recognizing Columbia’s first Black female entrepreneur. Yesterday afternoon, UofSC and Major League Soccer announced a multi-year partnership to provide online educational resources and post-secondary academic resources for previous and current players. The partnership will utilize the newly launched Carolina Online program + the university will serve as the Official Education Partner of MLS.
UofSC students will also receive exclusive learning opportunities from MLS, including internships. |
