- UKRI Statement - Coronavirus and funded research. UKRI have released a statement on the impact of the coronavirus and funded research.
- Horizon Europe will officially launch in April along with all of the work programmes and calls being published. Draft work programmes are available for all areas already and we have posted these on our sharepoint site which you can access here: RED – Research Development UK and International - Open and Forthcoming Funding Calls for Horizon Europe (sharepoint.com). - ***ECR*** Early Career Fellowship scheme is now open for applications. With support from the Rosetrees Trust and Wellcome Trust Institutional Strategic Support Fund (ISSF) the Elizabeth Blackwell Institute has funding available for an exceptional researcher in the area of mental health for young people, with particular focus on one or more (if intersecting) of three areas: self-harm and suicide; eating disorders; autism and mental health. If you have any queries, please contact the EBI Funding Officer, Sarah Blackmore at ebi-health@bristol.ac.uk There is a 2 stage application process: Stage 1 deadline: 23:59 Tuesday 30 March 2021. Selected applicants will then be invited to Stage 2 of the application process and will be sent a Stage 2 application form. Stage 2 deadline: 23:59 Monday 17 May 2021.
- Spring 2021 UHBW Research Capability Funding and Above and Beyond grants now open: Please find the application form and further guidance. - International Biofilm Centres Launch Priority Questions Exercise: The international group are calling for support from the biofilm community to help identify important questions that, if answered, will make a considerable impact on the fundamentals of the field of microbial biofilms, to innovation in technologies and other approaches to prevent, detect, manage and engineer biofilms. Such exercises can play a critical role in bridging the gap between the data generated by researchers, and the information needed by policymakers to make funding or regulatory decisions. Questions can be submitted via this short online form before 31 March 2021.
- Population Research UK Survey: Population Research UK is a proposed longitudinal population research initiative that HDR UK are scoping on behalf on ESRC, MRC and Wellcome. They have launched a short 15-minute survey to ask about your experiences of working with longitudinal population studies and your priorities for what Population Research UK might focus on. They will publish the findings of this survey on the Population Research UK webpage. It will inform recommendations to ESRC, MRC and Wellcome on the delivery phase of Population Research UK. Complete by 9 April.
- Early deadlines: ERC Starting and Consolidator Grant schemes: Assuming access to the ERC is maintained, ERC Starting and Consolidator grant schemes are likely to be amongst the first deadlines under Horizon Europe. If you are interested in applying to either scheme, please contact the EU Research Team Mailbox at eu-research@bristol.ac.uk so that we can keep you updated with the latest developments and guide you through the UoB process. Provisional deadlines are as follows: Starting Grant: 9 March 2021. Consolidator Grant: 20 April 2021.
- NIHR Blood and Transplant Research Units: NIHR is launching a new, single stage, competition to fund a number of NIHR Blood & Transplant Research Units (NIHR BTRUs), to support the research and operational needs of NHS Blood & Transplant (NHSBT) and to act as centres of excellence in multidisciplinary research in support of NHSBT. Universities can only submit one application per priority area, therefore there is an internal EOI stage. There is an NIHR call webinar on 22 March 2021 – interested applicants should register here. Brief expressions of interest should be submitted to the Research Development Team (research-development@bristol.ac.uk) Deadlines: Internal EOI deadline 9 April, Funder deadline 27 May.
- Expression of interest: UKRI transforming UK food systems for health and environment: Apply for funding to support interdisciplinary research into interventions that will transform the UK food system. Your project should bring together elements from both of these areas: 1) production, processing, manufacturing, food environments; 2) healthier diets and consumption. - Joint funding scheme between the BHF, DZHK and the DHF: This is a partnership research funding scheme between the British Heart Foundation (BHF), the German Centre for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK) and the Dutch Heart Foundation (DHF). Awards will fund research projects where the cross-national dimension enables work of higher impact than can be carried out nationally, and which will tackle novel and globally important themes. Application deadline: 30 April 2021.
- New 3-year PhD Studentship (Medical Research) opportunity: The Humane Research Trust (THRT) has a new opportunity to apply for a funded 3yr PhD studentship. The Trust are seeking applications from lecturers at UK universities, who were appointed in the last 5 years, to supervise a PhD project “Les Rhoades Memorial PhD Studentship”. The 3-year PhD studentship will be funded, including bench fees, consumables and stipend, to a total grant of £40,000 per annum. The closing date for applications is April 30 2021.
- Philip Leverhulme Prize 2021: These prizes recognise researchers at an early stage of their careers whose work has had international impact and whose future research career is exceptionally promising. As these are individual prizes and not research funding applications, RED will not be running a major bids process for the call, therefore Heads of Schools/Heads of Department, School Research Directors and Faculty research directors will therefore need to consider demand management procedures due to the institutional cap. The 2021 round closes for nominations at 16:00 on 17 May 2021.
- FCDO/MRC/Wellcome Health Systems Research Initiative In collaboration with ESRC – Foundation Grant (Call 8): This call aims to generate new knowledge to strengthen and improve health systems in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs). Priorities for the call include: multidisciplinary, collaborative and multi-country or multi-site applications; focused in-depth applications, including those driven by social science questions. - Opportunity Bristol: The Opportunity Bristol Scholarship is available again this year. UOB has 5 studentships available offering a UKRI stipend of £15,609 (20/21), Home fees and a £1000 consumables budget. It is focussed on WP in particular on underrepresented ethnic backgrounds: Black, African, Black British, or Caribbean, or mixed backgrounds featuring one of these groups. Funding is available for all MSc`s in Research across our school and also the MRes in Health Science Interested students should contact brms-pgradmin@bristol.ac.uk for further advice. - Biofilm Photography Competition: The National Biofilms Innovation Centre are excited to announce that they’re running two biofilm photo competitions as part of their #BiofilmAware campaign, ‘Biofilms in Real Life’ and ‘Biofilms in the Lab’. Amazon gift cards will be awarded to first, second and third place in both competitions. Details of these prizes and how you can apply can be found here. Both competitions are now open and will run until midnight on Monday 31 May 2021.

- Fund for International Collaboration Wave 2 Calls. Various current and expected funding calls for collaborative research. If interested email rd-international@bristol.ac.uk. Various deadlines.
- Bristol International Online Research Collaboration Awards launched: The scheme has been developed to help support international collaborations without the in-person visit normally associated with IRP awards. A range of collaborative activities can be funded through this scheme, which can also support operational costs such as event support and facilitation, translation and/or transcription services. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling monthly basis. Get in touch with irp-admin@bristol.ac.uk for any queries.
- UKRI Innovation Scholars Secondments: UKRI invites applications for individuals wishing to spend up to 36 months (full or part time) on secondment. We aim to: create porosity between sectors by enabling career mobility. boost the skills, knowledge and career development of people, intensify knowledge exchange between the biomedical industry and academia, add value to the Biomedical Sciences sector and the UK economy by increasing productivity. - ***ECR*** Bristol Collegiate Research Society Scholarships: An award of up to £500 towards the costs of participating in conferences or symposia, whether the event is 'in person' or online. The scholarship can cover the costs for presenting at online an conference and that no amount is too small. Find out more on the BDC site. - NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowships in Dentistry 2021: The NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship (ACF) is a clinical specialty training post in dentistry that incorporates academic training. The NIHR has allocated funding for 23 ACFs for recruitment in 2021/22, through the Integrated Academic Training (IAT) Programme. As an NIHR ACF you will have access to Masters-level research training to develop academic skills and spend 25% of your time in research or educationalist training. The NIHR ACF is a 3 year fellowship with a flexible entry level tailored to the career stage of the applicant.
- NIHR Clinical Lectureships in Dentistry 2021: The NIHR Clinical Lectureship (CL) is a postdoctoral award that provides a clinical and academic training environment for dentists to establish themselves as independent researchers and leaders. The NIHR has allocated funding for 11 CLs for recruitment in 2021/22, through the Integrated Academic Training (IAT) Programme. As an NIHR CL you will spend 50% of your time in research or educationalist training.
- GW4WARD Technical Staff Development and Funding Scheme: GW4WARD is an initiative designed to drive forward the professional development of our technical staff across GW4. Apply for funding and guidance to become members of professional bodies and learned societies. Apply for the travel bursary scheme to visit other GW4 institutions to develop networks, gain experience and develop skills. Technical staff can also collaborate and share best practice through a series of webinar discussions featuring external speakers. - Bristol Biobank Bristol Biobank stores samples collected from patients and healthy volunteers for use in biomedical research. Collecting a wide range of samples will provide a platform for research into complex conditions. Use, deposit and store samples. Researchers in Bristol and beyond can apply to use samples in their research or to deposit and store samples. Donate samples If you are undergoing hospital care, you may be asked if you would like to make a donation. We also take donations from healthy volunteers. Find out more about donating. Licence and ethics approval The Bristol Biobank is licensed by the Human Tissue Authority (licence number 12512) to store human tissue for research. It has ethics approval from Wales Research Ethics Committee 3 as a research tissue bank to collect and issue biomaterials for biomedical research across a range of therapeutic areas.
