Young people in Gowanda, NY are starting their skatepark project by getting the word out to the community any and every way they can!

BUILT TO PLAY SKATEPARK GRANTS

Some regions of the USA have very few permanent, public skateparks. This used to be the case in Southeast Michigan and Western New York. The Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation saw the need to create more places for young people to engage in free play, and from that the Built to Play Skatepark initiative was born.

Over the past two years, The Skatepark Project and RCWJRF have worked together to develop and open four new, permanent, public skateparks. This year, seven more are scheduled for construction, from Buffalo to Detroit. All it takes to get your project started is to get started!

“The Skatepark Project’s support included critical funding as well as guidance and moral support. This is a unique project for the City, so guidance from an organization that has been involved in many such projects has been very valuable.

My involvement in the project has included engaging with local youth, which is a group I don't interface with frequently in this role. It is positive to see this age group involved in a project in their community and I hope that the experience will encourage them to be engaged citizens throughout their lives.” -- Tom Devine, Senior Planner, City of Salem
