Private Counselling Service opening soon

Wood’s Homes has a reputation for recognizing and filling gaps in mental health services in the community.  In keeping with this, we are pleased to announce our newest service - another first for us - Elbow Springs Counselling.

This is the agency’s first long-term mental health private practice and will open March 31. It is targeted to those who are prepared to pay an hourly fee, and who do not want to contend with lengthy wait lists in the community.  Counselling and therapy for children, adults and families will be provided on a fee-for-service basis at 2424 4 St. S.W. in Calgary’s Mission community. Therapists are experienced, registered professionals and are equipped to help with a variety of issues including anxiety, depression, difficult child behaviour and family conflict.
Elbow Springs Counselling is a service provided by Wood’s Homes, which has been tirelessly devoted to supporting the mental health needs of children and families for more than a century. This service complements other Wood’s Homes counselling services with the ability to support clients for longer periods of time.

On May 7, Children's Mental Health Day,
the Calgary Tower will glow green for Wood's Homes
May is always an important time of the year for those of us who work in the mental health sector as we celebrate National Mental Health Week (May 3-9).

This year our staff, clients and supporters are excited to watch the Calgary Tower go green for Wood’s Homes on May 7 (Children’s Mental Health Day).

Our organization has celebrated this national day in a variety of ways over the years, using this time to raise awareness of mental health and the many programs and services we provide. We’ve held marches, open houses and one year shared a story of a young client with our online followers.

We encourage those who catch a glimpse of the Tower to snap a picture, and tag us on social media using the hashtag #childrensmentalhealthday.

Since the start of COVID-19 one year ago, child welfare staff have been working hard to deliver vital supports and services to children, youth, and families across the country.

In recognition of this, the Child Welfare League of Canada launched a nationwide campaign on March 9 to thank all of the highly dedicated child-care professionals for their commitment.

As part of this campaign, child and family caring agencies are being asked to share messages that recognize our staff on social media, in newsletters, etc. using the hashtag #TrulyDedicated.
Wood’s Homes is proud to be among the first agencies in Canada to share a staff profile as part of a series that feature child welfare workers in a variety of roles and with diverse backgrounds. Ibrahim Abunada, a staff at our Temple program recently had his piece shared on the national stage.

5 Days for the Homeless campaigns for
Wood's Homes Lethbridge
Wood's Homes Lethbridge is excited to have once again been the charity recipient of 5 Days for the Homeless, a national campaign run by the Canadian Association of Business Students that strives to raise awareness and donations for those who are at risk of or experiencing homelessness. This year's campaign took place March 8-12.

Last year’s fundraiser was cancelled due to COVID-19, and given that we're not out of the woods yet, this year the campaign went online.

As a beneficiary, our staff in Lethbridge were featured in a video speaking to our services. Various fundraisers in the community included a bottle drive, raffles and a 50/50 draw.

To date, $2,400 has been raised. There is still time to make a contribution – please click here.

We are proud and thankful to be part of such
a strong Lethbridge community!

Wood's Homes Research Journal
- Special Edition -
As we all know, a state of emergency was declared last March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. All health and human services organizations – including Wood’s Homes – have been challenged to keep pace with ever-evolving public health policies and protocols, while ensuring effective delivery of mental health services.

COVID-19 has not only had a great effect on people’s mental health, but it has also widely impacted the ways treatment services are now delivered.
Wood’s Homes’ response to these challenges has been captured in a just-released publication – the first Research to Practice Journal from a community mental health organization with a COVID focus.

There is critical need to examine which service innovations are proving to be the most successful in meeting the mental health needs of children, youth and families during the pandemic, and to share this knowledge.
The Journal answers how Best Practices will be informed in the future – assisting mental health organizations across the country.
