Dangerous fishing conditions warning Sunday 21 Mar
You won't be surprised to hear that BOM's dangerous conditions warning has been extended into Sunday.

The strong high over the southern Tasman Sea is not expected to move for the rest of the weekend. A trough lies near the NSW coast, and a small low pressure circulation is lurking inside that, near Seal Rocks. This low is expected to weaken later Saturday and Sunday.

A warning has been issued for the ENTIRE NSW coast for Sunday with large and powerful surf conditions expected to be hazardous for coastal activities such as crossing bars by boat and rock fishing. Seas will be 2.5 to 4 metres plus easterly swell of 3 to 4 metres. Swell period is very short, just 9 or 10 seconds.

With many coastal rivers in flood there will be serious hazards to boating from flood debris.

Another trough crosses the region mid-week; we'll keep you updated.

Check local forecasts on the BOM website at http://www.bom.gov.au/nsw/forecasts/map.shtml

Always tell someone where you are going and when you plan on coming back. If the rock platform is wet ask yourself 'why is it wet?' then watch the ocean for waves and swells for at least 20 minutes. Always fish with a friend, wear proper rockfishing footwear, light warm high-visibility clothing, and wear a life jacket in case you get washed in. Never turn your back on the ocean.

Also check out the links and safety advice on BOM's dedicated rock-fishing weather page.

Whenever you fish

  • choose a safe spot
  • don't fish alone
  • wear non-slip shoes
  • wear a life jacket
  • never turn your back on the sea.
