CWN Newsletter: April 1st, 2021
Dear CWN,

We want to acknowledge the horrific killings of eight people in Atlanta on March 16th, six of whom were of Asian descent and seven of whom were women. We are pained by the recent violent attacks on Asians and Asian Americans in our Bay Area communities and beyond, an issue that has worsened since the start of the pandemic over a year ago. We join our campus leaders in expressing our "solidarity with and sympathy for all in our campus community and beyond who have been hurt, frightened and traumatized by these vile, racist incidents."

We recognize that there is no right way to process. We invite you to practice self-care, embrace opportunities to check in with colleagues, friends, and students, and attend to the following:
As a community united by values such as curiosity, compassion, and open dialogue, we hope you will join us tonight at 5 PM for the Berkeley Conversation live stream on The Long History and Present Surge of Anti-Asian Violence led by Deans Raka Ray and Michael Lu, and featuring panelists such as Stop AAPI Hate founder, Russell Jeung.

Take care,
The CWN Steering Committee

Curious Children, Wise Elders: How Childhood and Elderhood, Together, are the Key to the Evolution of Human Cognition and Culture
Across many species an extended childhood and high caregiving investment appear to be correlated with intelligence and learning. Humans evolved an exceptionally long childhood and old age, and an unusually high level of caregiving, at the same time that they evolved distinctive capacities for cognition and culture. Dr. Gopnik will explain how these two developments are related, the relationship between children and grandparents, in particular, is key to human culture.

Tuesday, April 6th from 12:00 - 1:00 PM

Featured Speaker: Dr. Alison Gopnik, Professor of Psychology

NEW UC-WIDE FAMILY LEAVE POLICY
Open for Comment until Saturday, April 24th

We are thrilled that UCOP will be implementing the Pay for Family Leave and Bonding benefit!  There are also concerns with eligibility, as the benefit would be tied to FMLA eligibility, which would exclude those that are part-time or with less than one year of service.  We are encouraging staff and faculty that share this concern to submit a comment during the open comment period.

The proposed policy revisions are available to read online in both the
redline and clean versions, and employees covered by this policy who wish to provide comments on the proposed revisions may submit them to Abby Norris (Abigail.Norris@ucop.edu).

Campus colleagues have put together some
sample language, but also please feel free to modify or use your own words.
