Announcing the James A. Davis Jr. Memorial Scholarship Winners
Roosevelt Alumni for Racial Equity (RARE) has awarded its first two scholarships to students who will graduate from Roosevelt this June. Leah Scott and Elsabeth Assaye each will receive a $5,000 James A. Davis Jr. Memorial Scholarship award to attend college or trade school. Scott plans to attend North Seattle College to complete her transfer credits for either the University of Washington or Eastern Washington University. Then she plans to major in political science and economics. Assaye plans to attend the New York Institute of Technology and hopes to become a software developer. Restock the Pantry & Help Roosevelt Families in Need
The Roosevelt PTSA Packs for Teens program provides families in need with food, toiletries, and cleaning supplies. Please help us to restock our pantry by shopping the Pantry wish list. Items purchased from the Target wish list will be shipped to pantry organizers and then brought to the pantry for distribution. A minimum purchase of $35 may be required for delivery. As an alternative, your donations through our secure site are greatly appreciated.

Return to In-Person Learning Update
This week, SPS and the Seattle Education Association (SEA) came to a tentative agreement that supports a safe return to school buildings for all preschool, K-12 Special Education Intensive Service Pathways, and all K-5 grade students on a hybrid (in-person part-time and remote part-time) instructional model. The tentative agreement must be approved by SEA and the SPS School Board. It will be brought to the SEA membership to be ratified and to the SPS Board of Directors for a vote next week. Bargaining continues as SEA and SPS work to come to an agreement to bring middle and high school students back to classrooms, including 6-8th grade students attending K-8 schools. More information.
SPS Return to In-Person Health and Safety Protocols
Reducing the risk of COVID-19 transmission is everyone's responsibility. Local, state, and federal health guidelines have informed the development of the SPS COVID-19 Health and Safety Protocols. SPS has been using these protocols since the beginning of the pandemic. Here are the top 10 things families need to know, in English and with links to translations in 8 languages.
SPS Website Redesign Update and Invitation to Test
SPS is running a usability study on a draft website redesign for our district and school websites. You are invited to participate in an online session where you will be asked to complete several short tasks on a basic outline of a webpage design. Your participation is important to us!

Art Exhibit - Jacob Lawrence: The American Struggle
Seattle Art Museum, March 5 - May 23
Jacob Lawrence: The American Struggle questions the stories we’ve been told by amplifying narratives that have been systematically overlooked from America’s history. This exhibition reunites Lawrence’s revolutionary 30-panel series Struggle: From the History of the American People (1954–56) for the first time since 1958, and SAM will be its only West Coast venue. These modernist paintings chronicle pivotal moments from the American Revolution through to westward expansion and feature Black, female, and Native protagonists as well as the founders of the United States.

Seattle Promise FAFSA/WASFA Workshops
March 23, 24, 25, 30, or April 1, from 4-6 PM
Students who are eligible for the Seattle Promise scholarship are required to complete their FAFSA or WASFA by April 15. Our Seattle Promise partners are offering several workshops to support all Seattle Public Schools students and families with completing the FAFSA and WASFA applications. All Seattle Public Schools students and their families are invited to attend, even if they have not applied to Seattle Promise. The workshops are free and offered in multiple languages.
"Am I My Resume?" A Panel on Starting a Career in Theater Production
Friday, March 26, 4:00 PM FREE
In this workshop sponsored by The 5th Avenue Theatre, we will look at how you can make your way into behind-the-scenes opportunities that are integral to making the magic of live theater happen! First, we'll look at resumes and their importance as introductory tools, specifically focusing on resumes for production team members. Then, professional members of the International Alliance of Technical Stage Employees (IATSE) will answer questions about theater production after high school.
Students Exploring Pharmacy (STEP) Summer Program
A program designed to inspire high school students as they explore pharmacy as a career option. Students engage in hands-on activities that provide an introduction to pharmacy practice and perspective on the numerous ways a pharmacist contributes to improving people’s health—in ways that go far beyond dispensing medications. UW Summer Nursing Camp
There will be a fully online Nursing Summer Symposium. Current high school sophomores and juniors who are interested in learning about the nursing field and how to get into nursing school are invited to apply. Held completely online from July 12 – 16, 2021. Application by April 15th. Apply Here
Young Executives of Color
YEOC is a FREE nine-month college pipeline hosted by the UW Foster School of Business. Students attend sessions one Saturday every month on the UW Campus. The program serves and cultivates the academic potential of underrepresented high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors in the state of Washington. Deadline May 1st. Apply Here

Washington State PTA Legislative Report
This week’s report focuses on Governor Jay Inslee’s recent proclamation requiring all school districts to offer at least 30% in-person instruction to elementary students by April 5th and all students by April 19th. Seattle Public Schools and the Seattle Education Association (the teacher’s union) have recently come to a tentative agreement to offer in-person instruction to all K-5 students and students enrolled in middle and high school special education intensive pathways starting April 5th. Here are some bills of interest that are still alive:
- 2SSB 5327 would establish a program for receiving and responding to tips from the public regarding risks or potential risks to the safety or well-being of youth less than 25 years old, called the Youth Empowered to Speak-Up (YES) tip line.
- EHB 1342 would eliminate lunch copays for students who qualify for reduced-price lunches.
- SB 5299 would allow the use of computer science credits for the purpose of graduation requirements.
- 2SHB 1477 would implement the 988 National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis
- Hotline system by routing calls to local support centers and service providers.
Roosevelt PTSA Supports Testing And Remediation For Lead
This week, the RHS PTSA Board voted to support House Bill 1139 which would pay for and require testing for lead and remediation of public school water outlets in Washington State. Read the letter that was sent to state legislators to voice that support. To voice your support for this bill, visit the HB 1139 web page and click on the "Comment on this bill" button.
Help Prevent School Budget Cuts
Seattle Public Schools and other districts in the state are experiencing declines in enrollment this year, and in the upcoming school year. Declines in enrollment mean less funding and fewer teachers - Roosevelt is projected to lose 7 teachers next year. Additionally, since state transportation funding is dependent on transportation used in previous years, there may be a decline in state funding for transportation just as schools reopen. We need the state to step in and keep districts whole during this time of uncertainty. Please email your legislators, and the legislators in charge of crafting the budget, and tell them that they need to preserve school funding at pre-Covid levels. Seattle Council PTSA has drafted a sample letter that you can use, which includes legislator email addresses, but personalized letters are very helpful.

Ending the Silence - Mental Health Event
PNW Parent Education and the National Alliance present a second version of “Ending the Silence” on Monday, March 29, 2021 at 6:30 pm. This FREE online event is for parents/caregivers AND their tweens/teens who are in grades 6-12. The goal of this relevant and engaging presentation is to begin a larger discussion about mental health so that young people dealing with mental health conditions or simply struggling with the intense emotional burden of current events will realize they are not alone. The Moth All Country Story Slam
All Country is a free, virtual, out-of-school performing arts project. High school students from all over the country meet to practice and perform Moth stories every Saturday for 7 weeks. The program ends with a performance for friends, family and fans. Applications are due March 22.

Students can pick up breakfasts and lunches Monday-Friday, 11:15AM-1:15PM at 40 area schools, including Bryant Elementary, Sand Point Elementary, Eckstein Middle School, Nathan Hale High School, and Olympic Hills Elementary. Guide for Urgent Care
Not sure whether you should take your child or teen to urgent care or the emergency room: Seattle Children’s has a new guide in English, Spanish and Arabic. Urgent care doesn't do well visits, sports physicals, or return to play after concussion. Volunteer to Connect With Older Adults
RHS students looking for a volunteer opportunity can enroll in the Sages and Seekers program. This program pairs students with older adults to have conversations about life and work to dismantle the stigma around aging.
Volunteers Needed at SPS Schools
If you are in a position to add a volunteer commitment to your life in support of students most adversely affected by COVID-19, please consider volunteering remotely to support students and educators. Training on using MS Teams (our virtual classroom platform) will be provided - you do not need to have this software on your computer. Please view the most urgent volunteer support needs here. Then, complete an interest form so you can be matched with a virtual classroom!
