April is Poetry Month -- Join us Online!

This April, poet and fiction writer Michael West will lead a Poetry Writing Workshop in four weekly hour-long sessions on Saturdays at 2 pm, April 3rd - April 24th. Join the group online and bring what you’ve written, and get a respectful listen and constructive feedback with an aim to facilitate your growth as a poet. All forms are welcome - sonnets, song lyrics, hip hop, heartbreak confessions, vers libre, spoken word, villanelles, you get the idea!

Michael is a graduate of Williams College where he founded and edited the poetry magazine, rag. He received an MA in Creative Writing, Poetry, from Johns Hopkins University Writing Seminars. He has also taught writing and conducted creative writing classes at John Hopkins, American University, Northeastern University and Featherstone Center for the Arts. To register for this series on Zoom, visit:  https://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJMuceihqTsuGtwhwOXZibOqb-gvmaiJs1CC

Also in April, the Martha's Vineyard Poetry Reading Group will meet on Zoom at 10:30 am Tuesday April 6th. This is an interactive group that meets monthly. The meeting leader selects a poem(s), from the earliest Greeks to contemporary, to be read and discussed as a community, which always adds new dimensions to understanding. The MV Poetry Reading Group has been meeting for over 10 years and wants to stress how much more we get out of the poems when shared and discussed.

Contact Library Program Coordinator Anne McDonough at amcdonough@clamsnet.org for Zoom access information.

4 pm Thursday April 8th
Online: Food Waste Initiative with Eunice Youmans

Join Eunice Youmans from Island Grown Initiative as she explains the benefits of composting your household waste. Every year, 6,500 tons of watermelon rinds from hundreds of summer picnics, skeletons from bunches of grapes, citrus peels from fancy cocktails and countless eggshells, skins, husks, soggy napkins, lobster appendages, heads of romaine lettuce and moldy bread are shipped off the Vineyard at a premium. Vineyarders send the equivalent of 261 trucks of food waste back to the mainland annually according to estimates from an Island-wide organics feasibility study completed in 2017. At the same time, thousands of cubic yards of compost are shipped to the Island to enrich the soil.

6 pm Saturday April 10th
Online: Beyond the Mask Documentary

Martha's Vineyard libraries will screen  'Beyond the Mask', a documentary on Paul Laurence Dunbar, to be followed by a discussion with the director. Dunbar’s story strongly reflects the African American experience around the turn of the century. The man abolitionist Frederick Douglass called “the most promising young colored man in America” wrote widely published essays critical of Jim Crow laws, lynching and what was commonly called “The Negro Problem.” To earn a living, however, he also wrote poems and short stories in “Plantation dialect” and contributed lyrics for Broadway musicals that bordered on blackface minstrelsy. 10 am Wednesday April 14th
Online: Advance Care Planning with Healthy Aging MV

Sharing your wishes for end-of-life care can bring you closer to the people you love. It’s critically important. While no guide and no single conversation can cover all the decisions that you and your family may face, what a conversation can do is provide a shared understanding of what matters most to you and your loved ones, that can make it easier to make decisions when the time comes. Join the conversation to gather the toolkit! Please register at: https://bit.ly/3qDArp4

3 pm Wednesday April 14th
Online: Container Companion Planting

Free Library Events, Statewide

The Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners maintains a calendar of virtual programs offered by libraries across the state! Most of these programs are free to attend, from the comfort of home via Zoom or other online platforms.

A highlight of this week, Tewksbury Public Library presents two programs on the Women's Suffrage Movement in honor of Women's History Month.

"Images In The Women's Suffrage Movement"
SATURDAY, MARCH 27th, 2:00—3:00 PM

For as long as women have battled for equitable political representation in America, those battles have been defined by images -- whether illustrations, engravings, photographs, or colorful chromolithograph posters. Some of these pictures have been flattering, many have been condescending, and others downright incendiary. They have drawn upon prevailing cultural ideas of women’s perceived roles and abilities and often have been circulated with pointedly political objectives. Take a look at the ways in which women's right activists and their opponents used images to define gender and power during the Women's Suffrage Movement. Presented by Allison K. Lange, an assistant professor of history at the Wentworth Institute of Technology and author of Picturing Political Power: Images in the Women’s Suffrage MovementRegister directly on Zoom HERE

"Votes For Women -- A History Of The Suffrage Movement"
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 31st, 7:00—8:00 PM

The campaign for women's right to vote was a long one, from the 1848 Women's Rights Convention in Seneca Falls, New York to ratification of the 19th amendment in 1920. Who were the key players in New Hampshire and the nation? What issues and obstacles did they face? How did suffragists benefit from World War I in the final push for passage of the women's suffrage amendment? Who was left out when women got the right to vote? Using historic photos and documents, Liz Tentarelli will guide us on the journey. Liz is president of the League of Women Voters New Hampshire, a non-partisan organization that is the direct descendant of the National American Woman Suffrage Association. Register directly on Zoom HERE.

These events are co-sponsored by the Friends of the Tewksbury Public Library, in collaboration with the Memorial Hall Library in Andover, Stevens Memorial Library in North Andover, and the Wilmington Memorial Library.

For information on other virtual library programs being offered statewide, visit the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners calendar
