Grades K and 1 Hybrid Welcome Letter Abernethy 2021

Hello Kinder and First Grade and Mrs. Bielman’s blended class  “In Person” Learning Families,

The Abernethy Faculty and Staff want to welcome your students back into the “Little School Under the Elms,” some for the very first time. We are so excited to see some familiar faces and get to know the new students and their families.

Very important safety information and a general schedule for the day:

Teacher Planning Days
Please note that grades K-1 will have asynchronous learning days Friday, March 19 and again on March 29-31. On April 1 and 2, K-1 students will have a combination of synchronous and asynchronous instruction for their specials classes (art, music, PE, and library). Grades 2-5 will have asynchronous learning days March 29 - April 2. Please review linked
Resources for Learning During Educator Planning Days.

What do the 5 transition days look like for my student? Instruction during teachers’ planning days will be totally asynchronous. Students will have access to their regular applied learning apps such as Dreambox and Lexia or others suggest in the resources link. Teacher responses to assignments will be limited.

Why am I just learning this information? The district has been planning to open schools on April 12th. The Governor announced a much sooner opening. Detailed building plans and agreements with labor unions needed to be solidified. PPS and PAT (Portland Association of Teachers - union) worked together throughout the entire weekend to finalize a tentative agreement which was reviewed by union members and ratified today.

The PPS transportation department is working hard on bus schedules for students who need transportation. Schedules should be available and updated soon on their website link Abernethy Transportation and BUS Schedules.

Our cafeteria will be providing grab and go lunches for all students at dismissal between 10:15 and 10:45. Stay tuned for more details.

Although we are all very excited to welcome most of our students back to Abernethy school building, knowing the classroom communities that were built this year are coming to an end is extremely difficult for our teachers and staff. When we found out what this transition would look like, many teachers quickly planned some way to celebrate and commemorate the first three-quarters of the year spent together. While some of the details may be surprising to you, I hope that you know that we are all working very hard to make this transition the most positive experience possible for your child. As more information becomes available, I will continue to share with you. In the meantime, I hope this helps you begin planning for the last 6 weeks of this school year.

See you all on Friday, April 2 at 7:50AM. We will be smiling brightly behind our face masks!

We’re here to serve you as we embrace this transition together,

Abernethy Community Letter of Support for Our Asian American & Pacific Islander Community

Abernethy Community,

As your principal, I support and stand with you. We all must work together to support our Asian American and Pacific Islander students and to stand in support of each one, their families and community members by speaking up and reporting discriminatory acts of harassment and violence. As we prepare to return to in-person learning, it’s extremely important to me to hear from you what I can do to ensure our AAPI students know that they’re coming back to a safe, nurturing and inclusive environment.

The Abernethy community is a strong and vibrant one.  We will continue to work together to create a warm and welcoming environment, where everyone feels safe and their voices heard. If a message of hate or racism happens in our community we will take the appropriate action to quell this from happening again.  It is up to every one of us to reflect and act on how we can make Abernethy a community where all students and families feel welcome.

At Abernethy Elementary School we will strive to ensure all students and staff are safe from any form of racial acts or injustice.  If you are aware of any form of hateful message let us know so we can continue to work together to build a caring community.  While we will always respond quickly to hateful messages that arise in our community, that is not enough. Our district is working to train teachers and counselors to provide lessons to our students as part of the RESJ (PPS Racial Equity Social Justice Framework) as part of this year's implementation. A graduate of Portland Public Schools will be a compassionate critical thinker, able to collaborate and solve problems, and be prepared to lead a more socially just world.

Please take care of yourselves and your family, let us know if there is anything your school community can do to support you by either contacting me or our Counselors at any time.

Sincerely,

Dr. Christie M. Petersen
Principal
