"In the spring, at the end of the day, you should smell like dirt." – Margaret Atwood

It’s March, and spring is in the air, in the form of birdsong, midges, and some very welcome warmth. Here at EwA, this time of year marks the beginning of the field season, and in the coming days and weeks we’ll be opening up our multiple study sites throughout the Boston Area. We’re looking forward to embarking on another year of fieldwork with our wonderful community of citizen scientists.

In January, we published the 2020 EwA Conservation Report. You can read the full report, or just the highlights if you’d like, on our website. We got great feedback from both our site and data partner organizations as the report went live. Our friends at Caterpillars Count! were impressed at how deeply we’ve analyzed our arthropod survey data. We’re very proud of our 2020 Conservation Report, and we think it’s a testament to all the hard work of our citizen scientists, collaborators, and the wider community during a very hard year. We’d love for you to give it a look.

Looking forward, EwA is going to be involved in some exciting events this coming month, starting with participation in the Cambridge Science Festival, where EwA will be leading some citizen science wildlife documentation events. Later in the month, we have the Boston Area City Nature Challenge (CNC), which we’ve helped to organize as part of the Boston Area’s steering committee. The CNC encourages people from around the city to get out into their neighborhoods, enjoy nature, and document the species they find. EwA will be holding online webinars as well as field events for the CNC.

We’re looking forward to a great spring and summer this year, and we’re hopeful they’ll be much better than the last. Spring is a great time to catch up with EwA or get involved, so be sure to read below and learn a little more of what we’ll be up to in the coming months!

Join us outside this spring, happy season to all!

EwA Spring Events
Studying Nature's Cycles & Helping Wildlife Together
EwA has a few exciting webinars in store: A retrospective of EwA's 2020 insect survey in the region (and how you can help in 2021); a virtual meetup to prepare our communities for the 2021 City Nature Challenge–an international bioblitz where everyone can make a difference for the good of nature. EwA's walks and field sessions are also happening with small groups & with distance rules in place to keep us all healthy. Places are limited and we ask our attendance to follow a register-and-commit rule so as to not prevent someone else from getting in! Check the EwA Calendar for the full list of events. Here are a few...
Intro to iNaturalist & A Peep at Spring Species. We’re getting ready for the 2021 City Nature Challenge! Learn how to observe and record urban biodiversity and make it count! [Details & Registration →]
Learning about our Urban Insects and How to Help them. There's a lot that you can do to help pollinators & insects. Join us & marvel at what we've uncovered in 2020 and what you can do this year [Details & Registration →]
Nature Documentation – CNC 2021 Edition. Document with us the species of the Fells to get our observation counted in the International City Nature Challenge bioblitz. [Details & Registration →]

Connecting with Nature - Open Science
Help us Help Urban Biodiversity

At EwA, we connect deeply with nature through co-creative citizen science. Our model is one of science by the people, benefiting both People and Nature. Together we gain knowledge of our ecosystems and help the conservation of species interactions. Where we live in Massachusetts, our communities get a chance to experience what this means first-hand with EwA's Nature Documentation program.

EwA Community
Meet our Leaders, Interns, Citizen Scientists & Naturalists
We are glad to have Caitlin with us this spring (on the left). Caitlin joined EwA as a spring university intern (from Tufts University). Her main project is to develop phenology calendars to help our citizen scientists with some of the species that are a bit tough to monitor. Caitlin is also in charge of the EwA monthly News Digest. If you haven't a chance to read her conservation summaries, Have a look (> here) - They are great highlights! Our community of citizen scientists is strong, and ready to start recording (EwA Fells citizen scientists on the right). This community is the heart of EwA!
