This is an urgent alert from the Recreational Fishing Alliance of NSW
Recreational Fishing Alliance of NSW

UPDATE: Dangerous fishing conditions warning Monday 22 and Tuesday 23 Mar
The strong high over the southern Tasman isn't budging for the next few days, sending east to northeasterly air across coastal waters. This won't change until the next trough brings a westerly change mid-week.

BOM still has warnings of dangerous fishing conditions for rest of Monday for Byron, Coffs and Macquarie coasts, then clearing on Tuesday. There are new warnings for Tuesday for Sydney, Illawarra, Batemans and Eden coasts with seas of 4 metres and north easterly swell of 4 metres. Swell period is VERY short, down around 8 seconds!

With many coastal rivers in flood there will be serious hazards to boating from flood debris such as trees, fences, cows and houses. Terrible week for many people, some have lost everything.

Another trough crosses the region mid-week; we'll keep you updated.

Check local forecasts on the BOM website at http://www.bom.gov.au/nsw/forecasts/map.shtml

Always tell someone where you are going and when you plan on coming back. If the rock platform is wet ask yourself 'why is it wet?' then watch the ocean for waves and swells for at least 20 minutes. Always fish with a friend, wear proper rockfishing footwear, light warm high-visibility clothing, and wear a life jacket in case you get washed in. Never turn your back on the ocean.

Also check out the links and safety advice on BOM's dedicated rock-fishing weather page.

Whenever you fish

  • choose a safe spot
  • don't fish alone
  • wear non-slip shoes
  • wear a life jacket
  • never turn your back on the sea.
