                                                             President’s Report April 2021

Hello everyone,

The Short List announcement celebration attracted 33 members and three apologies. The Book Cow bookshop was a wonderful venue and thanks to Peter’s IT skills, the evening ran smoothly and was an informative PL session for the educators who were present. Rosemary Thomas did an excellent job analysing the fiction books and ACT Judge Margaret Bromley spoke about the Eve Pownall category. We were pleased to be able to congratulate Gina Newton for her well deserved short listing of “Hold On! Saving the Spotted Handfish”. Every library, school library and home library needs this book. The formalities were rounded off by a talk from Lisa Fuller about her book “Ghost Bird” which was an Honour Book last year. This is a riveting read for Older Readers and adults, suspenseful and with insights into Aboriginal traditions and law. There was time left talking with our speakers and for browsing and buying. There were many happy book purchases made.

NCACL and UC collaborate to bring an adventurous exhibition showcasing pet dogs in
children’s literature
The National Centre for Australian Children’s Literature Inc and the University of Canberra
collaborate to bring well-known dogs to this exciting new exhibition including Bob Graham and
Alison Lester.
The University of Canberra announces an exciting new exhibition opening up in the Mura Gadi
gallery located in the library. The exhibition will showcase pet dogs in children’s literature and
preliminary artwork and sketches by Bob Graham and Alison Lester. It will be free of charge.
The exhibition includes:
- 35 objects ranging from watercolour pieces, preliminary and framed artworks.
- Three different themes including companionship, adventure and ‘a helping hand’.
The exhibition includes unused material, rough sketches and collages plus objects that have
rarely been seen by the public.

The Exhibition has been put together by four UC students, NCACL volunteers and Alex Stalker-Booth (Art Collection Coordinator for UC).

This is a matched funding campaign, running from now until 16th March.  Further information, click here.

'The March of the Ants' is Ursula's new book.  It is the story that she wrote especially for the ceremony at the National Library when she was announced as the Australian Children’s Laureate in February last year.  If you go to the Laureate Downloads (under Read, Write & Learn) on the ACLF site you will a lot of resources from Ursula including writing and other fun activities.

Libraries ACT - Story Walk

Enjoy walking? Enjoy reading? How about both at the same time?

Both have great health benefits and we’ve combined them to create a walking route with a difference. Enjoy Libraries ACT’s first ever story walk and follow Erin-Claire Barrow’s retelling of Cinderella, with a page to read at each stop. Starting from Belconnen Library, follow the walk to each stop to find out what happens next. Find out more on the Libraries ACT website where you can download a map to follow (or you can scan the QR code at one of the stops to download it).
