LWRC Pair Rowing

Are you an experienced sweep rower with an interest in rowing a pair at LWRC? First note, that we are not encouraging people to go out alone in pairs until late spring to summer when the water and air temps are warmer. If you are interested in winter pair rowing, it's our job to make the experience safe for all. Check out the new "vetting" progression for pair rowing:

  • Take a private or shared lesson with coach. The goal is to review steering and get comfortable with pair partner. Your coach will give you the OK to move on from private lessons into a coached class.
  • Attend a Small group class: every Friday from 7:30-8:30 with Brooke in March. In April you will have a chance to go out at 6:30 or 7:30. These are designated "pairs/doubles" sessions so that you have boats of roughly equal speed so coaches can keep an eye on the whole class.
  • Other classes are available if Friday does not work (Theresa's morning class, John's Saturday class) but are up to the discretion of coach. Please email coach and ask if a certain date or time would be ok to join a class.
  • Once the coach has seen you safely steering and handling a pair in their class, they will give you the OK to go out without a launch. You will still need to go out with a buddy boat (single or another pair- just a safety buddy).

Note: we currently have 4 pairs rigged. Two are starboard stroked, Tolt and Entiat. Two are port stroked, Hotspur and Serendipity. Although COVID has caused us to be more flexible with small boat use, we are primarily a sculling club.  As COVID restrictions ease up and doubles use increases, we reserve the right to re-rig pairs to doubles as needed for member use. We will likely maintain two boats rigged as pairs. if you would like to switch the rigging (starboard vs port) please contact the captains.  We will communicate about this when we see doubles use increase.

Also note: if you've already gone through part of this progression, you don't need to start over.

Questions? contact Captains Kelly or Megan - Captain@lakewashingtonrowing.com
Give Captains one week lead time to meet your requests. Thank you

Open Water Adventures

LWRC has a short, but illustrious history of Open Water rowing. To do this requires stamina, courage, safety, proper assessment of conditions, knowledge of tides and currents... to name a few.  If you are interested in this fun activity LWRC would like to make it possible for you to participate by offering workshops and experiences to prepare you to race.

LWRC will create policies around who can transport equipment and row in the regattas. A combination of mentorship, trainings and experience will be required. We care about your health and safety as well as the proper use of our Open Water rowing fleet. We have convened a group of bad ass experts to guide you and help us develop good protocols so you can move toward this goal.

JOIN US on April 7th at 6 PM for a ZOOM training, hosted by Tyler Peterson. Zoom details will be  shared a few days before the event.

JOIN US on April 11th from 7-10 AM for an Open Water adventure on Lake Washington, hosted and guided by Theresa Batty. To participate you must be an experienced sculler, able to row 10-12 miles, equipped with a PFD (Personal Flotation Device) and be willing to take instruction.  LWRC has four Open Water doubles for those in Quarantined/Vaccinated pods. We also have singles that are equipped with bailers. We will open up registration next week. Anyone with their own personal Open Water Boat is welcome to join without registering, as long as you meet the requirements stated above.

Lake Whatcom Classic on May 5 LWRC supports members racing in the Sound Rower race series. These races are rated for difficulty and take place on fresh or salt water. Unrelated racing groups may design race courses with tight turns or in very rough water. These are appropriate for kayakers, surf skiers, etc. Only experienced open water rowers should consider racing in these races. LWRC reserves the right to deny use of club equipment for races deemed risky. Click to check out all  Sound Rowers races
