Green Built Guide: March 2021

Register for Next Month's Continuing Ed:
Radon-Resistant New Construction +
Edible and Native Plants of WNC

Our 2021 continuing-education schedule launches next month with two classes on Radon-Resistant New Construction and Edible and Native Plants.

Both classes provide approved hours for general contractors as well as architects, and also count toward our new Regenerative Professional Accreditation credential that acknowledges a deep, evolving competency in advanced green-building best practices.

1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 13:
Radon-Resistant New Construction
Led by Phillip Gibson of NCDHHS, this course teaches about radon measurement, radon-resistant measures in new homes, and radon mitigation in existing homes.

2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 27:
Edible and Native Plants of WNC
Led by Laura Ruby of YummyYards, this course teaches about edible and native plants for landscaping, and how to bring these in with clients and specific sites.

Next month's two classes total six hours, which would fulfill all of the elective hours required annually by North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors, as well as being eligible for credit through American Institute of Architects and other trade groups.

Offering discounts for members, our series continues on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month through June.

Solarize Campaign Hosting Launch Event + Registering for Free Evaluations

Solarize Asheville-Buncombe
will launch its community-based group purchasing campaign early next month to assist local property owners to access affordable solar power.

Solarize campaigns harness the power of the crowd to save some major green while residences and businesses go green; the more community members that participate, the greater the savings!

The Solarize campaign is being administered by Blue Horizons Project, a program of Green Built Alliance. The April 7 launch event will introduce and explain how solar power equipment, battery storage and energy-saving technologies are available for the first time locally through a group-purchasing platform supported by community partners collaborating this year in Buncombe County.

Interested residents can visit the campaign website to register for the April launch event and sign up for a free evaluation.

Fond Farewells to Two Beloved GBA Staff Members, Maggie Leslie and Yulia Shaffer

The end of March marks the departure of two of our nonprofit's staff members, Green Built Homes Program Director Maggie Leslie and Energy Savers Network Operations Coordinator Yulia Shaffer.

Our whole community has benefited from Maggie's wisdom and passion for the nearly two decades that she has worked for our nonprofit — almost its entire time in existence. While we are sad to see her go, we couldn't be more grateful for all she's done for us or more excited to see the myriad great things she has ahead of her.

Yulia became involved with Energy Savers Network in its naissance, and the program owes much of its grassroots growth to the energy she has selflessly invested over the years. While it's hard to imagine ESN without her smiling face and kind spirit, we are happy to send her on and can't wait to see the amazing things she does next.

Stay tuned to next month's newsletter to meet the new staff members who will help grow these programs in the future!

Pick Our Staff's Brains In New Home Energy Chats

The Blue Horizons Project team now offers one-on-one virtual meetings with Buncombe County residents to go over simple home energy-saving ideas and make connections with energy-efficiency resources. This is an opportunity for homeowners to sign up for a one-on-one Zoom consultation and get all their home energy and renewable energy questions answered by Blue Horizons staff. This could include references to nonprofits, local contractors, and immediate energy-saving advice.

County Video Spotlights Energy Savers Network

A program of Green Built Alliance, Energy Savers Network was founded with a dual mission: to help people and combat climate change. The organization envisions a sustainable future where communities are free from the worst impacts of fossil fuel history. Income-qualified households in Buncombe County are eligible for free energy-saving weatherization upgrades to their homes through ESN, which sends volunteers to install many types of upgrades depending on the property's needs.
