Halshka Hulevychivna (1575-1642), an educated woman who belonged to the nobility of the late XVIth - early XVIIth centuries, understood the need to modernize Kyiv and prepare leaders for the nation. She donated the land that was her country estate in the lower part of Kyiv, in Podil, to build a school and a monastery, what was then known as the Kyiv Brotherhood Academy, and later became the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.
