Gunman kills 8 in Atlanta spa attack
On Tuesday night, eight people were shot dead in three Asian massage parlors in and around Atlanta. The shooter, identified as 21-year-old Robert Aaron Long, confessed to the killings and had told investigators he had “a sexual addiction.” Long indicated he may have frequented the spas in the past, police said, and that they were “a temptation for him that he wanted to eliminate.” The possibility of a hate crime has not been ruled out. The attack comes as hate crimes and incidents of harassment against Asian-Americans have spiked in recent months.
Biden administration invests $10B in COVID testing for schools
The Biden administration announced Wednesday that it will be spending $10 billion dollars to expand testing for schools across the country. The funds come from Biden’s recently passed $1.9 trillion coronavirus stimulus package. The money will be used to provide diagnostic tests to symptomatic teachers, staff and students, as well as those who don’t have symptoms but might have been exposed to an infectious person. The funding will also be deployed to ensure schools can conduct screening tests to identify infectious teachers, staff and students who don’t have symptoms.
March Madness kicks off with thrilling matchups, upsets
The NCAA Division 1 Men’s Basketball Tournament kicked off on Friday, as 64 teams will compete to capture the National Championship. Games the past three days saw some shocking results as heavily favored #2 seeded Ohio State lost in overtime to #15 seeded Oral Roberts in the first round and top seeded Illinois fell to in-state competitor Loyola Chicago in the second round. Games will continue through March until April 5 when the National Championship is slated to occur.
