55% of Lane students surveyed are against an immediate return to in-person instruction, according to data released at March 18’s Lane Local School Council (LSC) meeting. Along with additional information about the LSC’s response to CPS’ reopening plans, the meeting included an update about Lane’s prom and graduation plans. Last week, CPS held their second virtual town hall regarding a return to hybrid learning, hoping to answer questions still had by students, parents and teachers. While not every question was answered, CPS debuted new information about orchestrating a safe high school return, including plans for each high school to tailor the reopening to its student body. Assistant Editors Aidan Sadovi and Mara Mellits have more on the town hall.
A & E Throwback Thursday

Viking Press

For the second edition of Throwback Thursday, Editor-in-Chief Ryan Fairfield reviews “Know My Name” a 2019 memoir written by Chanel Miller about her experience getting sexually assaulted and the aftermath of it.

“Throwback Thursday” is a new addition to the Arts and Entertainment section of “The Champion.” These reviews aim to introduce readers to different works of entertainment that, though not new, are still relevant and intriguing. For the month of March, all “Throwback Thursday” reviews will focus on works that either feature women or are told by women, in honor of Women’s History Month.

You snooze, we news: What we’re reading
Here are some stories we’ve been following from across the nation

Gunman kills 8 in Atlanta spa attack
On Tuesday night, eight people were shot dead in three Asian massage parlors in and around Atlanta. The shooter, identified as 21-year-old Robert Aaron Long, confessed to the killings and had told investigators he had “a sexual addiction.” Long indicated he may have frequented the spas in the past, police said, and that they were “a temptation for him that he wanted to eliminate.” The possibility of a hate crime has not been ruled out. The attack comes as hate crimes and incidents of harassment against Asian-Americans have spiked in recent months.

Biden administration invests $10B in COVID testing for schools
The Biden administration announced Wednesday that it will be spending $10 billion dollars to expand testing for schools across the country. The funds come from Biden’s recently passed $1.9 trillion coronavirus stimulus package. The money will be used to provide diagnostic tests to symptomatic teachers, staff and students, as well as those who don’t have symptoms but might have been exposed to an infectious person. The funding will also be deployed to ensure schools can conduct screening tests to identify infectious teachers, staff and students who don’t have symptoms.

March Madness kicks off with thrilling matchups, upsets
