Your Vital Updates from
Tasman Bay Chiropractic
Hi All

A very warm welcome to our quarterly newsletter. It is hard to believe that autumn is upon us already but the shorter days and cooler overnight temperatures confirm that the seasonal change is underway

The summer season was busy for us again, but we all got some time away to enjoy our own wee taste of the great kiwi summer.

We launched our first theme of the year at the beginning of January with a reminder to all of us that there is a strong link between a healthy outlook and a healthy body - AND that this is a process that repeats on the back of itself. It doesn't really matter what your New Year's list of resolutions was - a positive and healthy outlook will set you in good stead.
The March-April theme segued nicely - who is your hero? Who or what inspires you? The thoughtful words for our front office team members are up on the noticeboard and featured on our Facebook page.

Having Fun

With our 2021 summer nearing its end, we are well into another fantastic year here at TBC. Over the summer months a personal focus of mine was having fun and putting the stress of 2020 behind me. One of our adventures over the break included a hike up to Angelus Hut in the Nelson Lakes National park. We decided to walk the Robert Ridge track on Boxing Day and return via the Speargrass track the day after. As you will remember, Boxing Day 2020 brought some crazy weather to the region, including a violent hailstorm through the valleys and into Motueka. While this was all happening we were 1650m above sea level watching the weather come through while above us snow was falling. For my partner Marissa this was a little taste of her Canadian Christmas which we both enjoyed. The next morning we had the joy of tramping back through the snow to get down into the shelter of the bush and cruise out of the park, fresh faced and ready to start another year.

Now that we are back into our normal routines for the year a recurring theme is that people seem to have forgotten to schedule in time to have fun. Our holidays are over for most and for some reason a conversation I keep having with people is that they are getting overstressed and are sacrificing their health and wellness. Scheduling in time for fun should be as important as scheduling in time for brushing your teeth in the morning, eating meals and commuting time to work or home. The reason we need to be having fun is it helps pull our body out of fight or flight mode and into a state of relaxation called rest and digest.

Your idea of fun could be anything! Spending time with children, reading a book, watching your favourite tv show, going for a walk/swim/bike-ride, playing sport, going out on a date, baking; whatever it is, make time for it each day so that you can allow your body to unwind. For me, volleyball is my fun time, even though it's hard work. I enjoy being able to smash a ball as hard as I can at someone and they can’t get mad about it. Especially when I play against Corrian and we spend most of the game aiming for each other to see who is the better player. It's usually always me.

Whatever your fun thing is, make sure you make time to do it.
Enjoy

The recreational drug use question …

Some of you have asked why we screen for recreational drug use in our new client paperwork. One of the things we chiropractors look at is stress. Stress comes in many forms, but we break it down into three main categories – traumas, toxins and thoughts. Stress has a huge impact on our health and wellbeing.

Stress from trauma comes from knocks, blows and repetitive activities found in many lines of work. Stress from thoughts comes from emotional stress and anxiety, which can have a negative effect on our ability to deal with everyday life and resilience to illness.

Stress from toxins comes into our bodies in many ways – through the environment, and also from things we put into our bodies such as food, alcohol and recreational drugs.

How your body adapts to stress, whether it be physical, chemical or emotional, significantly affects your health status. Chiropractors work to enhance the body’s function and ability to adapt and deal with stress, as some stressors cannot be removed from our lives (eg. job or family obligations). By getting your brain and body more connected and increasing the body’s resilience to stress, your body can respond to everyday stress and more effectively cope with new stressors.

We screen for drug use as it has an influence on how people respond to chiropractic care. Recreational drugs slow down the healing process and the general functions of the body. For example, nicotine from cigarettes reduces blood flow to injured areas, which impairs healing of injured tissues. Since we want the best outcomes, one of the components is a thorough screening process of all the potential stressors in each person’s life.

We remind you of our respect for patient-practitioner confidentiality and appreciate your honesty as this gives us a fuller picture of your life.

Best wishes
Bryony

Belonging
Do you have a sense of belonging?

What does this mean for you?

As humans we need to belong, to one another, to our culture, our friends and family, our country and our world. To belong is primal and fundamental to our sense of happiness and well-being.

What can we do to ensure we actually feel as if we belong?

Keep and teach an open mind

  •  join a group activity
  •  learn something new that stimulates you
  •  try giving to the less fortunate eg community work
  •  share your thoughts with those who understand
  •  engage in conversations that uplift you and give you enthusiasm.

Practice an open mind

  •  it is okay if we don't all agree. We don't have to.
  • -try to walk in others’ shoes by practising empathy
  •  we are not all wired the same way but we can still connect and show kindness.

To keep it simple, we need to make sure we are mindful of our behaviour and how we relate to others.

Seek to strengthen your connections and try to make new ones too! Find your TRIBE and stick with it. Having a solid foundation, whatever that looks like for you, will enable you to deal with whatever life may throw at you.

If you do feel like you are swimming in circles please reach out. Here are some links that may benefit you.

Dear Future CA Superstar

Before you read any further you will need to understand a wide range of terms to work at TBC.  I have included a glossary to help you, in order of importance:

  • TBC - Tasman Bay Chiropractic

  • CA - Chiropractic Assistant and the one in charge!

  • Chiro - Chiropractor

  • Peeps - Our fabulous clients - why we do what we do

  • DNA - Did Not Arrive (you know who you are)

  • FOMO - Fear Of Missing Out

  • Whoop Whoop - TBC’s preferred method of expressing great joy or celebration

I want you to know before you start that your very existence at TBC means that our chiro’s can do what they do best - care for our Peeps. You will not be a receptionist.  You will not just chat with the clients but will make them feel like a part of your extended family; their sense of belonging will be so great that they will get FOMO if they miss their scheduled appointments. They will be delighted to hear from you to find out why they DNA and appreciate your concern at caring so much to check that they are alright.

Your CV will demonstrate that you are willing to learn new things but please include mind reading as this is a ‘must have’ to be successful in this role! You will magically have all the paperwork ready and anticipate the chiro’s next step; this also makes you a superstar. Previous job experience that includes juggling would be an advantage as at times you will have many things happening at once and you will not want to drop the ball.

You must love coffee - TBC team members are regulars at Lydia's Cafe and you will be able to tell when everyone (by everyone I mean Corrian) is in need of a coffee pick me up. If you can't go yourself to collect it then you will need to be able to coerce anyone at hand to get it for you.

You will be joining a CA team with a combined 30 years of knowledge and experience, so once you join you will find a new family who will lovingly push and guide you to higher levels of service than you imagined possible.

I look forward to meeting you, please apply soon.

With love and kindness

Inspiration
I find choosing someone that inspires me very difficult. I have managed to surround myself, in my workplace and in my friendships, with very strong, independent, successful and likeable people. I think that this is what helps to inspire me.

When I think of the different people in my life I have a very big range. I have my family - the people that know me the best and have loved me the longest; the people that will always be there for me and that I know I can turn to at any time when I need support, no questions or judgement. We celebrate and commiserate together. I draw a lot of strength from them, and have a lot of love for these people.

I have my oldest and dearest friends - the people that I met in high school/university and that have been with me through my life's journey so far. These are the the people that I celebrate with, cry with, laugh with, but most importantly the people that you can go months (sometimes years) without seeing or speaking to but when you do finally catch up with them it is like you saw them just yesterday. The conversation is easy, there is no awkwardness.
Then I have the people I have chosen to work with. I have worked a few jobs in my time so far, but this is the place I have been for the longest. These are people I trust, and have built up a strong relationship with. They are the people I have turned to for advice, and because of that trust, advice that I listen to. They are my second family and my friends.

Since meeting my husband and having our children, I have gained a whole new set of friendships.  My husband came with a band of friends that are fun and outgoing and we have made a lot of happy memories with these people. My children have led me to make friendships with a wide range of people - people that I don't think I would have met otherwise (even though Nelson is quite a small place). These friendships are really strong, and I feel this is important as it also helps my children to build those strong lifelong friendships, the ones that they will take on their life journey.

So I guess I take inspiration from all the people that I have chosen to surround myself with. And for that I am grateful and feel very lucky.

Much love
Victoria
How do we know we have achieved our goals?

At the beginning of 2021, after an interesting life and health journey over the last ten years, it became clear to me that I had a number of loose ends to tidy up. Gaining this clarity came from feeling that I didn't have the time or headspace to take a decent break in one of my favourite parts of the world - Totaranui.

I did however manage to have a few nights there this summer and while there, I hatched a plan! I will know that I have achieved my goals and completed my plans for 2021 when I experience my one month stay at Totaranui at the end of the 2021-22 summer.
If you are wondering why I want to spend so much time there, it is because it is very relaxing and great for my mental and physical health - fishing, running, swimming, walking, socialising and spending time with loved ones, family and friends. As a busy health care professional and business owner, I have always found it difficult to take holidays. However, I realise that they are valuable and support my ability to serve. The time has come!

I am learning to better project-manage and limit taking on new projects. Some of you that know me personally will understand that this may be difficult for me! However I have set a goal and am keen to achieve it.

This year I will be
  • managing the building of a large shed to house my car collection
  • remodelling and painting the premises at TBC
  • purchasing new plant including highly specialised chiropractic tables
  • preparing a property to potentially expand TBC services into
  • landscaping
  • increasing the amount of quality time I spend with my children
  • continuing ongoing professional development as a chiropractor, colleague and business owner.
Watch out for more photos of summer time in Totaranui in our autumn 2022 newsletter!

Best regards
Corrian
Lifelong Learning

Lifelong learning is defined by Wikipedia as "all learning activity undertaken throughout life, with the aim of improving knowledge, skills and competences within a personal, civic, social and/or employment-related perspective".

Being a lifelong learner is a key part of our team culture at TBC. It is also key to one of my personal favourite set of words about making 'the total more than the sum of the parts'. With each team member learning and growing and sharing their knowledge and skills within the team, an exciting momentum is generated and the whole entity that is TBC grows and builds depth and strength. The potential is forever growing too.

What does being a lifelong learner actually mean? What are some of the characteristics of a lifelong learner (LLL)?
  1. Read - books, blogs, fiction, non-fiction. LLLs read widely across a variety of genres. We can include podcasts in this now too.

  2. Formal Learning - online, offline, personal attendance. LLLs seek opportunities to attend formal learning activities.

  3. Grow - explore a language, develop a skill, create, be hands-on, ask questions. LLLs don't spend a lot of time on the couch channel-surfing! They are forever broadening their knowledge and personal database!

  4. Care for your Body - physical fitness, mental fitness. LLLs work to enable their bodies and minds to flourish.

  5. Passion - progress an interest, engage in a topic, explore. LLLs push through the hard times and have well-developed problem solving skills.

  6. Goal Setting - formalise a goal and set a deadline; write it down. LLLs use goal setting tools to carry on improving and building and they are self-motivated.

  7. Embrace Change - keep an open mind and recognise opportunities. LLLs have a mindset that makes it look as if they are lucky - but they are open to opportunities so are more likely to recognise a good one when it presents itself.

  8. It's Never Too Late - it is lifelong! Literally!   LLLs will not be heard saying "I am too old" and they cherish the human being's ability to continue to develop and grow our minds.

  9. Leave the Comfort Zone - get uncomfortable, take risks. LLLs look for ways to turn threats into opportunities, to challenge themselves; they view 'failure' as an opportunity to learn and grow and change.
Being a lifelong learner in a workplace requires a pretty special set of people around you. To support each other in our learning and growing, we
  • accept mistakes as part of the process
  • 'hear' feedback as it is intended rather than see it as failure or criticism
  • debate ideas and thoughts and questions and see it as learning and growing rather than disagreement and conflict
  • celebrate goal achievement, reaching milestones and successes - for the big and the little things
  • share positive feedback with each other
  • enjoy each others' strengths and differences.
All of the above requires each of us to 'be on the same page', to respect and value our team culture and to forever ensure that we have an environment where it is 'safe' to be a lifelong learner.

I am very proud to be part of the TBC team where we work hard at achieving and maintaining the above. I have learnt from every one of my team members.

Happy learning

Frequently Asked Question of the Season
Why DOES my chiropractor set a follow up timeframe?

Your chiropractor will set a recommended time frame for a followup visit
based on a variety of factors. These may include the length of time the current
issue has been a problem, your overall health and their knowledge of how well adjustments ‘hold’ for you.

We recommend that you keep to the care plan that is set for you and will support you to do this. Your plan is devised using a combination of well-developed specialist knowledge and your own health status. Your plan is an individual plan devised to maximise the benefit you gain from your visits.

There are more answers to common questions about chiropractic on the NZ Chiropractors’ Association website.
