In addition to offering our workshops here at CEAC  we are able to deliver some of our arts workshops within the school environment, space permitting. We are happy to discuss options with you.

WORKSHOPS FOR TERM 2 2021

BENEATH THE WAVES OF TANGAROA

Age Range:  YNE +
Time: 3 hours (including 20 min break )
Capacity: Min. 23 - Max. 60 students
Fee: $8.50 plus GST per student


A printing and collage workshop centred around the theme of the ocean creatures of Aotearoa and their habitats. Students will learn about the print making process, each making a print of their chosen sea creature. These prints will then be developed further into a dynamic collage which encourages students to think about the habitats existing beneath the waves of Tangaroa. Each student will come away with an A3 mixed media artwork on heavy card.

 
THE MOVING SKIES OF VINCENT VAN GOGH

Age Range: YNE+
Time: 3 hours  (including a 20 min break)
Capacity: Min. 23 - Max. 60 students
Fee: $8.50 plus GST per student

Taking cues from Van Gogh this workshop will start outside,  feeling the air movements and observing shifting cloud and light. Students will use Van Gogh mark making techniques  to create  their own version of the sky above.

Returning to the studio, students will paint, mix colour and learn about directional brush marks. Finally we will add moving clouds, teaching kids in a fun way about composition. Each student will end the workshop with a colourful depiction of the sky  with moving parts attached.
MANU TUKUTUKU V1
Age Range: Y5+
Time: 3 hours (including 20 min break ) 
Capacity: Min. 23 - Max. 60 students
Fee: $11.50 plus GST per student

Students will learn traditional Maori binding and decorative techniques to assemble frames and craft a manu tukutuku.

Hiwa-i-te-rangi is the final star and it’s name is connected to the promise of a prosperous season. ‘Hiwa” means vigorous growth. Maori believe this wondrous star carries our dreams and wishes on a joyous journey through the coming year. This is a similar notion to ‘wishing upon a star’ or making a new year resolution.

 
MANU TUKUTUKU V2

Age Range: Y3+
Time: 3 hours (including a 20 min break)
Capacity: Min. 23 - Max. 60 students
Fee: $8.50 plus GST per student

The Matariki cluster will be a starting point to learn about the Manu Tukutuku and Manu Aute flown to connect with Nga Atua during the time of Matariki. Students will create a contemporary version of a traditional Manu tukutuku, learning a traditional Maori binding technique and create their own symbols and decorate their Manu Tukutuku to connect with Hiwa-I-Te-Rangi, the star associated with realising our aspirations for the coming year.

MATARIKI MANU
WITH EXHIBITING ARTIST PENNY HOWARD
A Drawing workshop based on wishes and inspiration from the exhibition Hiwa i te Rangi.  

Age Range: YNE+
Time: 3 hours 
Capacity: Min. 23 students - Max. 60 Students

Artist Penny Howard’s solo exhibition Hiwa i te Rangi will be shown at Corban Estate Arts Centre Homestead Gallery between 4th June to the 18th July during the season of Matariki.  As part of this workshop the students will be visiting her exhibition which examines this youngest star in the Matariki cluster, the wishing star and juxtaposes both her Maori and European ancestry in terms of what it is to make a wish. The students will be creating their own vibrant bird silhouette using black paper and pastel, it will be filled with images that explain and create their own wishes, dreams, resolutions to fly to Hiwa over the new year.

Penny Howard’s practice explores narratives about finding her own cultural identity, being of Māori (Te Mahurehure, Ngāpuhi) Irish and Scottish descent. Her works centre around memories, stories and a longing of, and for, whanau, whakapapa and tūrangawaewae within her Māori and European ancestry. The recurring red thread in her works represents I Nga Wa O Mua, the Māori world view of taking the past forward into the future.

ASSEMBLAGE ART

Age Range: Y3 - Y8
Time: 2 hours
Capacity: Min. 40 - Max. 60 students

WITH FOUND MATERIALS ARTIST ANDREW HALL
Andrew is an artist who is passionate about sustainability and recycling. He will share the reasons he uses found materials, and how he draws new life from discarded objects. A master of ingenuity and improvisation, Andrew, and our educator will work with students to develop their imagination and inventive skills and assemble 3-D sculptures from recycled, man-made ‘found’ materials.

 
CERAMIC STUDIO 

Age Range: YNE+
Time: 3 hours
Capacity: Min. 23 students - Max. 60 Students
Fee: $14.50 plus GST per student
                           
WITH CERAMIC ARTIST KAIRAVA GULLATZ

In this hands-on clay class, students will design and shape their very own vessel,  tile, or waka huia. They will be glazed and fired, making their vessels fully functional for everyday use. Students will learn hand-building techniques and will decorate their ceramic project vessel using two different clay colours.

PACIFICA EXPERIENCE WORKSHOPS

PACIFICA EXPERIENCE  2.0 

Age Range: Y NE - 13
Time: 2 hours 
Capacity: Min. 23  - Max. 50 students
Fee: $8.50 plus GST per student
 
If you have enjoyed Pacifica Experience  - come to our Pacifica Experience 2.0! 

Learn about Pacific migration, communication, oral traditions, geography, and social constructs, and how traditions have changed and adapted over time. The focus is around Pacific sound and movement.  Elements include drum, chant and story-telling, dance and ukulele.  In-school workshop delivery unavailable at this time. 
PACIFICA EXPERIENCE

Age Range: Y NE -Y13
Time: 2 hours 
Capacity: Min. 23 - Max.50 students
Fee: $8.50 plus GST per student

In this workshop students learn how Pacifica music, songs and movements convey stories and pass on lessons of cultural identity and Pacifica protocols. The workshop will be held at the Pacifica Arts Centre at Corban Estate and is run by the Mamas. Students will be introduced to musical instruments of the Pacific and learn drum patterns and dance movements. The Mamas will also teach students how to transform environmental or recycled resources into a colourful lei.
In-school workshop delivery unavailable at this time.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT 

At Corban Estate Arts Centre we are serious about the arts and the role it plays in education. We believe in passing on knowledge and skills to anyone who is interested and that means adults as well as children and young people. We develop workshops to suit your needs - engaging specialist tutors covering a wide range of skills from Maori visual arts to oil painting, printmaking, ceramics and mixed media.
We can deliver individual masterclasses, a series of sessions over the term, or once a month all year long. Our professional development programme is diverse and multi-dimensional, and will offer teachers the opportunity to explore and experiment with techniques, materials and a broad range of outcomes.

SENIOR PROGRAMME

We provide customised programmes for intermediate and high schools. From a one hour gallery tour to a full day programme and we can organise workshops with artists to match your curriculum needs. Extend technical knowledge with specialist artist workshops, or  tour studios and talk with on-site practising artists. Recent specialist workshops have included life-drawing classes, graffiti workshops, textile design and print, oil painting techniques. sculpture tours, and curator talks.

MEET THE TEAM:

Megan Carter: Arts Education Manager. She has been involved across the Arts sector as a producer, coordinator and writer, and is currently completing her Masters in Creative Writing through Massey University. 

Jean Stewart: Arts Educator. She has maintained a painting practice for more than 15 years and recently exhibited at Corban in the Shifting Landscapes exhibition. 

Penny Howard: Arts Educator. She is a practicing artist with works in several private and public collections. Her primary focus lies in identity.
