PLEASE NOTE: Events listed below may get postponed or possibly cancelled. Please always check with the events directly for updated information. Thank you.

1) Service Award Presented to Debbie Langston

Debbie Langston, Chairperson of the PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women completed her maximum five-year term on March 22, 2021. Council members and staff presented a service award to Debbie at a recent Council meeting that recognized her contributions to Council’s work throughout her term as Council member, Vice-Chairperson, and Chairperson.

We will miss her very much ~ on behalf of the current Council members and all the members who shared the Council table with Debbie during her term.

The text on Debbie’s service award offers our thanks and reads as follows:
Debbie Langston of Blooming Point has served on the PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women since 2016, as Vice-Chairperson from 2018-2019 and as Chairperson from 2019-2021. Debbie has inspired Council colleagues and staff with her perspectives as an immigrant who chose PEI as home, a person who has been subjected to racism and discrimination, a youth worker, a student, and a parent. Debbie’s passion for advocacy for Black, Indigenous, women of colour and her commitment to standing with survivors of violence, especially sexualized violence, have raised awareness and resulted in changes of attitude and behaviour for countless Islanders. She wrote groundbreaking personal and political commentaries, including “Dear Lisa,” which held the front page of The Guardian. She hosted the 2019 and 2020 Montreal Massacre Memorial Services with power and poise and helped lead the 2018 Equality Report Card process to assess government progress towards gender equality goals.

Thank you, Debbie for your bold leadership of the PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women to advance the status of women in PEI.

8) Upcoming: LEAF's Personhood Speaker Series: Trans Inclusion in Feminism

Join LEAF on Wednesday, March 31st from 8:00-9:30pm (ADT) for our closing event on personhood and gender equality: "Trans Inclusion in Feminism"

LEAF is hosting a five-part Speaker Series in lieu of an in-person Gala this year. Join us on March 31, 2021 for our final panel.

Tickets

About this Event
The Personhood Speaker Series aims to create a space to discuss what makes a ‘person’ and whose voices need centering in conversations about gender equality in 2021 and beyond.

LEAF’s aim in this series has been to tackle ongoing challenges for personhood by asking who is still left out of that concept today. Who is on the margins, and what can we do to include them?

Trans women have historically been excluded from mainstream feminist spaces, and in the Canadian context, from ‘personhood’ and feminist struggle. These painful realities and narratives are shifting, but unevenly so.

At LEAF’s closing event on personhood and gender equality in 2021 and beyond, please join our four esteemed speakers to explore the feminist intersectional imperative to include all women in feminism, as well as to dream beyond the binary and open up to gender justice for all. Our speakers will discuss how they do or don’t take up and inhabit feminism and feminist struggle as part of their identities and work – and why.

The funds raised through LEAF's Personhood Speaker Series will continue to support our work to advance substantive equality rights in Canada through litigation, law reform and education.

Thank you to our generous sponsors for making this event possible: CUPE National, UFCW Canada, Delaney Capital Management, BMO, Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario, Cavalluzzo LLP, Koskie Minsky LLP, Ontario Nurses' Association, Goldblatt Partners LLP, The Law Society of Ontario, Stockwoods LLP, Lax O'Sullivan Lisus Gottlieb LLP, Kastner Lam LLP, Borden Ladner Gervais LLP, Lerners LLP, AMAPCEO, Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg LLP, Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association (OECTA) and Madame Premier.

**NOTE** For Ontario lawyers, this panel has been accredited by the Law Society of Ontario and contains 1 hour and 30 minutes of EDI Professionalism content. For Nova Scotia lawyers, consider including this course as a CPD learning activity in your mandatory annual Continuing Professional Development Plan as required by the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society.

10) The Big Little Challenge Raffle for Big Brothers Big Sisters

It is that time of year again where I am doing some fundraising for Big Brothers Big Sisters Big Little Challenge. This year once again they are not able to hold the annual Bowl for Kids Sake safely in our community. This is a huge loss for Big Brothers Big Sisters. They have been providing life changing mentoring experiences since 1912, and have been names as One of Financials Post’s Top 25 Charities.  Many children and youth in our communities struggle with societal barriers and face adversities in their lives. With the support of a mentor, these risks can be reduced or even avoided, and youth can reach their full potential.

This year Big Brothers Big Sisters have teams performing themed challenges within the community and I am a member of the “NuWelcom”Team. NuWelcom is a new Tech Company who have recently launched the community App for Newcomers and Islanders alike pushing out community information and government notifications in ten languages. It is free to the user on the Google and Apple Store so feel free to download.
We are also selling raffle tickets
1st Prize - Weber BBQ from Home Depot
2nd Prize - $250 Confederation Court Mall Shopping Spree and $100 Esso
3rd Prize - $150 Sobeys Card

Anyone wishing to buy tickets $5.00/each or 3 for $10.00 can email or private message me (Karen Lavers) on facebook. I can take etransfer and message you your ticket stubs with no contact necessary. Please feel free to ask anyone if they would like to purchase or donate to Big Brothers Big Sisters....I also have a pledge sheet and any donations over $20.00 will be issued an official tax receipt. Any questions please reach out.

Draw date is Tuesday, April 6th.  Thank you for your continued support for the children of our community.

18) Islanders’ opinions wanted on policing services

March 22, 2021

Islanders will have the opportunity to share their experiences and provide feedback on provincial police services.

As part of government’s continuous improvement efforts, ADGA(link is external) was selected through a competitive process to conduct a mid-point evaluation of the 2017 police review. The evaluation will assess the progress achieved to date and identify opportunities to further enhance provincial public safety initiatives.

“I’m proud of the work that’s been accomplished since the review came out, but it’s been some years since the original review was done. Government has a responsibility to respond to the needs of Islanders. We can only do that if we take the time to hear from people to make sure that our priorities match up."

- Justice and Public Safety Minister Bloyce Thompson

As experts in defense and security, ADGA will engage with Islanders across the province including municipalities, law enforcement and community partners to review current public safety activities and produce a well-researched, qualitative report to support the Department of Justice and Public Safety’s mandate to fight crime in the province.

“The events over the last year were eye opening for us all, ranging from having to follow strong measures to keep us healthy and safe from COVID-19, to the hard realities we have to face about systemic racism in our society. One thing is clear, when it comes to public safety, there are always things we can do better to make sure all Islanders feel safe in their communities,” Thompson added.

Islanders can complete the survey in English or French from March 22 - April 9, 2021.
