Welcome Message
While our social calendars may still be a bit light, the month of May is definitely speeding right along!  The weather has been so nice lately that I suspect everyone is busy outdoors, either planting, gardening, playing or exploring.  I know the past year has been challenging, but it looks like we are coming around the bend and are in the homestretch.  While the homestretch may still require us to participate in virtual meetings, I think we are moving towards a time when we can enjoy each others company in person again (YIPPEE…and yes, I am shouting 😉)!

Thank you to everyone who joined Chatham-Kent 4-H on April 27th to visit and hear Andrew Campbell speak.  It was great listening to Andrew’s perspective and seeing everyone again.  For me, just seeing the smiling faces of Chatham-Kent members and leaders boosted my spirits and then I got to hear about all the projects Andrew has tried his hand at.  I loved hearing his message about taking the plunge and trying something new, but equally knowing that sometimes it is okay to step back, admit things are not working the way you had planned, and then having the courage to change directions again.   During the last year with COVID, I can see where we as 4-H members have worked on some of those messages Andrew shared.  All of us were a bit hesitant to try virtual meetings.  Would they work? Could members still visit with each other, have fun, and learn at the same time?  Did we want to even tackle trying a new technology?  Many months, and some experimenting later, we’ve realized we can do it, and do it well.  Is it the same as meeting in person?  No, but we can still connect, enjoy each others company, and learn.  We have changed direction and are moving forward with a path that works for now.  Thank you, members and leaders, for being willing to try, experiment, and ‘learn to do by doing’.  You are amazing.

So, for those of you ready to try your hand at extra Provincial 4-H activities, in addition to the 4-H clubs you are taking, you have options!  This year you can order your own Discovery Box to be delivered to your home.  The box contains several activities for you to do at your own speed, and level.   Check out the 4-H Ontario Camp section, under ‘NEW! 4-H Discovery Boxes 2021’ for more details and to order your box.  You can check out the 2021 Virtual option of Career Mania under the 4-H Ontario Conferences Section, but visit soon since registration closes in June.  Go For the Gold will be virtual again this year, and our county GFTG competition will be running on July 20th, for those of you who want to test out your 4-H knowledge.  Similarly, Region 6 will be organizing and hosting a virtual Judging Competition so keep your eyes open for registration.  Lastly, if you just want to try your hand at virtual 4-H clubs being offered elsewhere in the Province go to https://4-hontario.ca/youth/online-programming/ to see what is on offer.

So, take home message?  Remember to enjoy the weather and whatever life brings, and take a page from Andrew Campbell’s playbook and try something new this summer.  Hopefully, you’ll love the experience, but if it ends up not being your cup of tea, remember there are a ton of other opportunities just waiting for you to try instead.

Joke

As a farmer, I hear lots of jokes about sheep.

I’d tell them to my dog, but he’d herd them all.
