The program includes speakers and descriptions of presentations and panel topics addressing the symposium theme, Mental Health in the Time of COVID-19.

SBE’s Seminar Series to feature science author Carl Zimmer
Award-winning science author and New York Times columnist Carl Zimmer will discuss his book “Planet of Viruses” in an online talk at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 9.
The talk is part of the 2021 School of Biology and Ecology Seminar Series. The school hosts each seminar at 2 p.m. every Friday via Zoom. Zimmer’s talk is sponsored by both SBE and the UMaine Institute of Medicine.
The Institute of Medicine (IoM) requests proposals in the areas of health and life sciences for a seed grant program. This grant program is meant to support the goals and objectives of the Institute. This program requires two or more full-time UMaine or UMM faculty to work together on a pilot project aimed at collecting preliminary data/proof of concept leading to submission of a related significant proposal by July of 2022. Preference will be given to projects that require collaboration across departments and/or colleges. Proposals must be received by May 15, 2021.

Research Highlight: Kaye Publishes Handbook of Rural Aging
A comprehensive resource guide dedicated to understanding the aging experience in broadly defined, has, until now, been unavailable. The Handbook of Rural Aging (Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, 2021), finally fills that gap. Edited by Lenard W. Kaye, Director of the University of Maine Center on Aging and Professor, School of Social Work (and a member of the IoM’s Leadership Committee), The Handbook goes beyond the perspective of a narrow range of health professions, disciplines, and community programs that serve older adults in rural America to encompass the full range of perspectives and issues impacting aging Americans and the communities in which they live.

UMaine School of Nursing’s graduate Family Nurse Practitioner program receives a grant from the American Society of Addiction Medicine
The grant's focus is to reduce stigma around substance use disorder and increase treatment among primary care providers through the development and piloting of an evidence-based curriculum. UMaine Family Nurse Practitioner program also implemented the X-waiver training into the final semester of the curriculum as an effort to increase access to treatment for patients in our community. The x-waiver training enables new graduate NPs to prescribe buprenorphine to treat patients with substance use disorder once they enter practice.
The purpose of the center is to fund research focused in understanding and preventing occupational injuries and illnesses. In addition, the MEMIC Safety Research Center will serve as a bridge between researchers, businesses and state entities to transform ideas into real-life solutions.
In our first year, we will award up to three $10,000 research grants.

Student Spotlight: Daniella Leal Espinal, Institute of Medicine Fellowship recipient
The University of Maine’s Center for Undergraduate Research announced in November the first winners for two recently established fellowship programs. Supported by the Office of Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate School, CUGR created the UMaine Institute of Medicine and UMaine Artificial Intelligence fellowships this year and awarded fellowships to fourteen undergraduate students for the 2020–2021 academic year. Undergraduate proposals were awarded $1,200 each.
Daniella Leal Espinal, a University of Maine undergraduate student majoring in Microbiology received one of the Institute of Medicine Fellowship. She has been working in Dr. Edward Bernard’s lab where she is researching how the mechanisms in which black soldier fly larvae grow have antibiotic properties.
Dr. Hermann Haller was recently appointed as a University Research Professor of Medicine. He is President, Professor at MDI Biological Laboratory and Professor, Director, in the Department of Nephrology and Hypertension, Hannover Medical School, Germany. The Institute is planning increased collaboration between research faculty at the University of Maine and faculty at MDIBL.
