Emissions Monitoring

We have published the emissions monitoring results for operational activity during February 2021.

The emissions levels are set out in our Environmental Permit that was issued by the Environment Agency which reflects the emissions limits set out in the Industrial Emissions Directive.

The graph shows the level of permissible emissions according to the Environmental Permit, shown by the yellow line. The actual emissions produced by the Facility are shown in green as a percentage average output over the month. For this month, as before, all emissions produced are below the permitted limit set by the Environment Agency and our Permit.

We update the website every month with the previous month's emissions monitoring. For previous emissions data, please see the historical emissions data page.

Community Fund 2021 Update

Applications for the 2021 Community Fund opened in March 2021. Due to COVID-19, the closing date has been moved from June to the end of August 2021 with decisions being made in October. The Fund is open to constituted community groups and parish organisations from Hardwicke, Quedgeley, Brookthorpe-with-Whaddon, Haresfield, Harescombe, Standish, Moreton Valence and Whitminster.

Run by community representatives from the Community Liaison Group (CLG), the Fund supports local groups and organisations that are running projects that benefit environmental, societal or community causes. Urbaser provides the capital for the Fund which is £25,000 per annum and undertakes small administrative duties for the application process.

Past beneficiaries include Whitminster Parish Council who were able to install gym equipment on Whitminster Playing Field. This is useful for players, amongst others, who can perform warm-up procedures before matches.

Another previously successful application saw the installation of three village gateways by Haresfield Parish Council in summer 2019. Following concerns about an increase in traffic and cars speeding when entering Haresfield village, the Council felt the gateways would remind drivers to slow down, an approach which had been successful in neighbouring parishes such as Standish. They are an attractive way of notifying drivers that they are entering a village location.

Learn more about the Community Fund on our website.

Back in January, we unveiled our new animation video which explains how the Facility operates. The animation also describes the journey household residual waste undertakes to power the equivalent of around 25,000 homes across Gloucestershire.

Dan Pearson, General Manager at the Gloucestershire Energy from Waste Facility, commented:

“We get a lot of questions about what we do here, how we turn waste into energy and, ultimately, how it is helping the environment. It is a complex process so we are pleased that this video provides a resource that simply and effectively explains the process.”

Helping the local community to spread Christmas cheer

During the Christmas period, the Facility supported the Caring for Communities & People’s (CCP) Hamper Scamper campaign.

CCP provided 1,953 food hampers and 2,200 gifts to vulnerable individuals and families who were struggling over Christmas. Hamper Scamper is a free service provided by CCP and so every donation of food, gifts, time and money can help to keep the appeal running.

See the full report now

If you would like to help CCP, they are looking for food donations all year round, including long-life, fresh and frozen items. Donations can be dropped off at the CCP Head Office (340 High Street, Cheltenham) from Wednesday – Friday, 9am – 3pm.

GCSE Education Plans to be launched online

Following receipt of the Engineering Education Grant Scheme (EEGS) award at the start of 2020, Urbaser has completed Phase one of the Gloucestershire Energy from Waste GCSE Education Plans. Curriculum-linked sessions have been developed for GCSE Physics, GCSE Chemistry and GCSE Design & Technology which draw on the Facility’s processes, technology and design to illustrate content taught in schools for KS4.

Phase two is now in progress to convert these sessions into an ‘online provision’ that will be accessible from the Facility website. For each GCSE subject, there will be a pre-recorded video lesson with a supportive teacher and student packs, as well as a downloadable Activity Pack for teachers to use with students in the classroom to explore key content together in the form of a group activity.

This GCSE online provision will be actively promoted to all secondary schools in Gloucestershire for use by Science and DT teachers. Lessons and activities are aimed at Year 10 and 11 students. If there are any schools that you feel we should be in contact with, please email info@ubbgloucestershire.co.uk to let us know. When the Visitor Centre reopens, we hope to welcome students to see the Facility first-hand to further bring the classroom-taught content to life!

Gloucestershire County Council launch new #clearonplastics campaign

Gloucestershire County Council (GCC) has launched a new campaign with district council partners and with the support of WRAP to help make residents #clearonplastics. The campaign includes information and advice to help inform residents about our plastic problem and what each of us can do to help solve it.

The majority of plastic is not biodegradable (meaning it doesn't rot). This means it will hang around in the environment for hundreds of years! Moving away from single-use plastic by reducing and re-using means that less plastic is needed; this helps to eliminate plastic waste and can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Plastics can also be very confusing when it comes to recycling too and GCC wants to help you understand what you can recycle at home. There are also other routes to recycle some plastics and this Clear on Plastics campaign aims to inform you about what you can do with other common household plastics that are a little more difficult to recycle.

Visit www.gloucestershirerecycles.com/clear-on-plastics to find out more.
