Dear Friends and Colleagues,

We are deeply disheartened and frustrated with the Government’s plans to criminalise trespass.

There is a significant national shortage of places for nomadic Gypsies and Travellers to legally and safely stop. However, the Government is planning to bring in new laws which mean people who live on roadside camps could face time in prison, a £2500 fine, or their home being taken from them.

We have been working with members of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Gypsies, Travellers and Roma to object to the draconian proposals in parliament, and were moved by the number of politicians who spoke up for the rights of Gypsies, Travellers and Roma in the debate on the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill debate.

In the week since we launched our ‘write to your MP’ tool, over 4000 people have alerted their MP to their objections to these devastating measures and asked them to oppose the legislation. If you haven’t already, you can do so here.

We have found allies and partners across many sectors since these proposals have come to light. Together, we will continue our pursuit for a common sense and humane approach to nomadism. Everybody needs a place to live. It should not be a crime to have nowhere to go.

In solidarity,
Sarah Mann

Update from our casework:

"The lockdown has increased feelings of isolation and loneliness among young people, as well as a drop off in education. FFT youth team have been focusing on increasing digital skills of young people so they are able to participate with remote learning, engage and interact with peers and access online resources and tuition. In the last month we have helped 44 young people to access iPads through grants. They can now participate in online learning and socialise with friends."
