Officer Elections

It is time for one of the most anticipated events of the year - Annual Club Officer Elections! With the restrictions and guidelines surrounding COVID-19, this year’s elections will be held virtually but will still provide you with the same opportunity to run for a position, share your ideas and make a difference in the Actuarial Science community!

Check out our Webpage to learn how the virtual elections are going to work this year! In helping you decide, scroll through the Officer Descriptions page to learn more about each officer position and their specific duties. You are also encouraged to sign-up for a 1-1 chat with an officer on the virtual elections page where you can ask questions about their role, experience, election tips and seek any sort of advice that might help you take your leadership to the next level. Additionally, we encourage you to sign up to attend an officer meeting to get an inside look at what it's like to be on the leadership team.

Anyone who wants to run for a position can fill out the Candidacy Form and submit their video speech to actuarialclubuw.elections@gmail.com. Speeches are due Wednesday, April 14th - 11:59 PM for the President position (1.5-minute video) and Sunday, April 18th - 11:59 PM for Vice President positions (1-minute video). All videos will be published on the election webpage before the voting period begins.

You are also highly encouraged to post on the Actuarial Club Elections 2021 event page to campaign for yourself. Voting for the President position will take place Thursday, April 15th 12:00 PM CST to Friday, April 16th 11:59 PM CST. Voting for the VP positions will take place from Monday, April 19th 12:00 PM CST to Tuesday, April 20th 11:59 PM CST.

Even if you are not interested in running, please voice your opinion and exercise the beauty of democracy by voting! Tell all your actuarial friends to either run for a position or vote virtually! Please contact Aaron Lubich (lubich@wisc.edu) if you have any questions 😊

Meeting Long Term Care Needs in Today's Environment

As people live longer, more individuals are requiring help with care at home or extended stays in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. The cost associated with receiving that care can be daunting—often exceeding $100,000 per year. Long Term Care insurance helps individuals plan for this care and protect their retirement savings.

However, the Long Term Care industry has faced significant challenges. Since the first policies were issued, changes in key pricing assumptions and consumer behavior has led to poor experience and many insurance companies leaving the market. To combat these challenges, Actuaries have been involved in the development of innovative product designs which help meet clients’ needs while reducing risk for the insurance company.

Actuaries from Northwestern Mutual in Milwaukee will go over some of the history and new developments in Long Term Care insurance and look forward to networking with you after the presentation!

This Week in Insurance: The Suez Canal

There's currently a large 400-meter, 224,000 ton cargo ship called Ever Given that's stuck in the middle of the Suez Canal, effectively stopping maritime routes through one of the busiest canals in the world. This article details some examples of claims and supply issues that result from this incident, due to the following perils:

  • Loss of revenue from other companies, due to disrupted trade
  • Claims for hull and machinery damage of the ship
  • Losses to perishable goods/missed delivery deadlines, both on Ever Given and other delayed cargo ships
  • Damage to the canal due to excavation to free the ship
  • And much more...

Joke Time!

An actuary is walking down the corridor when he feels a twinge in his chest. Immediately, he runs to the stairwell and hurls himself down. His friend, visiting him in the hospital, asks why he did that.

The actuary replies, "The chances of having a heart attack and falling down the stairs are much lower than the chances of having a heart attack only."
