2020 Climate Forward Progress Report Released

We are thrilled to release our Somerville Climate Forward progress report for 2020. Last year was not what any of us expected. However, despite it all, climate action remained a priority in Somerville. Some highlights from last year include:  Read the full report here to see a full summary of progress made in 2020. 
The City of Somerville will be offering household hazardous waste pickups monthly from April through November. The first event of 2021 is scheduled for Wednesday, April 14. Registration is required at somervillema.gov/ HWPickup and the registration link will be activated three weeks in advance of each event. 

Household hazardous waste that can be disposed of at these events includes: 
  • Paint
  • Batteries
  • Oil
  • Poisons
  • Pesticides
  • Cleaners
  • Antifreeze
  • Lightbulbs 
  • Electronics
  • Lighter fluid & kerosene

Planning Board, Zoning Board of Appeals, and the Urban Design Commission seeking new members

The City of Somerville is seeking to fill vacancies on essential boards and commissions appointed by the Mayor and coordinated by the Mayor’s Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development. Boards and commissions offer an opportunity for community members with a range of experience, skills, expertise, and perspectives to share their talents and insights with their community. Applications for the following positions will be accepted through Friday, March 26. Interested candidates should email a resume and cover letter, as well as any relevant supplemental material, to planning@somervillema.gov.
 

Upcoming Events 

  • Wednesday, March 31  -  Public Safety Building Public Meeting at 6 P.M. on GoToMeeting. The Public Safety Building Project will provide new facilities for the Somerville Police Department’s Headquarters and the Somerville Fire Department’s Engine 3 at 90 Washington Street in East Somerville, as well as space for additional civic, residential, and/or commercial functions. The new public safety building will be designed to net zero standards. 
  • Thursday, April 1 - Climate Forward Ambassadors Webinar on Transportation Solutions. 6:00 - 7:00 P.M. on Zoom. All are invited to join for presentations and Q&A on Somerville's emissions reductions strategies for the transportation sector including strategies related to buses, bike infrastructure, and electric vehicles.   • Friday, April 2 - Trash Reduction in the Mystic River Watershed (virtual) workshop series. The EPA and the Mystic River Watershed Association are hosting three free info and discussion sessions on how to reduce trash in the Mystic Watershed. The first session will focus on Trash Reduction & Capture: Lessons Learned and Best Practices. Learn more about the workshops and sign up here
  • Wednesday, April 14 - Commission on Energy Use and Climate Change Meeting. 7:00 - 9:00 P.M. on GoToMeeting. Register here
