A community is as strong as its partnerships. Clarke Square Neighborhood Initiative (CSNI) believes and modeled this philosophy by including six partners located in the Clarke Square neighborhood in a recent grant opportunity with Milwaukee County.  In late December, CSNI was awarded a Community Resilience grant and this funding addressed meeting the needs of the most vulnerable families in Clarke Square. The impact of the pandemic has hit hardest families who have lost jobs or have families with the virus and cannot work.  This partnership allowed us to work with community groups such as Pa’Ti Mujer (For Women), Familia de Arte (Art Family), Vecinos Unidos (United Neighbors), Prince of Peace Elementary School, Inner Beauty Center, and the Street Angels.

As the COVID-19 vaccine becomes available in our communities, please help us by sharing important information with your friend, families or elders in your life about scheduling an appointment.  To learn more information about the COVIDVAX, please visit City of Milwaukee Health Department.

La Familia de Arte: Monuments celebrate neighborhood heroes during the pandemic
This spring La Familia de Arte, Inc. and Clarke Square Neighborhood Initiative will be installing small monuments that will honor the everyday heroism of our neighbors during the pandemic. We will also be honoring those loved ones who have died due to Covid-19. These monuments will be installed along Cesar E. Chavez Drive.
In May you will have an opportunity to inscribe the names of the people you have known who have died on one of our tiles.
Stay tuned for more information in April about that event.

Prince of Peace Elementary School: 40 families granted laptops or chromebooks
One of the greatest needs facing many of our families in Clarke Square is having access to technology. To this end, CSNI with the Milwaukee County Resilience grant distributed forty laptops and chromebooks to residents in the Clarke Square neighborhood. It is our intent to help residents learn how to use technology, not only for themselves but so they can help their children as well.

Inner Beauty Center of Milwaukee: Personal care items, hoodies and backpacks help exploited women
The ministry of Inner Beauty is to help women who are exploited and sexually trafficked.  The staff and volunteers help women discover their value and purpose.  The Inner Beauty van works in the community, providing personal needs, building trusting relationships and walking alongside clients through recovery and healing.

A letter from Deanne Lawson, Executive Director and Founder:

Dear CSNI,

I want to express to Clark Square Neighborhood Initiative a wholehearted Thank You for including us in the project grant you had at the end of 2020. The women we reach out to have been affected in many ways by COVID, mostly in the closure of services and limitations on meal programs. Many of the women also had limited access to clothing that these programs had available. The items purchased for us by CSNI will help us fill a need for items such as gloves, personal care items, hoodies and backpacks. The sexually exploited women we connect with are often homeless, living in abandoned buildings, under bridges and sometimes under porches. The items purchased for us will bring some comfort and care back into their lives.

Thank you so much. Many Blessings to the entire CSNI Board and Staff.

-Deanne Lawson

Hope and Street Angels: Duffle bags, blankets, gloves and bus passes are a blessing for homeless outreach
Thanks to a very generous grant from our friends at Clarke Square Neighborhood Initiative and Milwaukee County Resilience grant (our new neighborhood partners), Street Angels were provided with new duffle bags, large and small blankets, gloves and bus passes to be added to our "H.O.P.E. (Homeless Outreach Provider Emergency) Kits" for our First Responders and Emergency Rooms.
Kits were shared with Milwaukee Police Department - District Two, Milwaukee Police Department - District 6, West Allis Fire Department and Community Medical Services.
We will continue making our way through the City/County, building partnerships to strengthen the safety net for our friends experiencing homelessness.

Thank you Clarke Square for helping us bring HOPE to our most vulnerable neighbors.
