An Overview of the ASI
Standards Revision

The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) certification program, which includes the Performance Standard and the Chain of Custody Standard, is currently the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminum value chain. As of December 2020, 102 aluminum and other stakeholder facilities have been certified, located in 40 countries covering all world regions. Building on this implementation experience, and as part of a regular cycle of review, the ASI is currently undertaking a major Standards Revision process.

Hydro Pioneers Sustainable Solution
for Red Mud Disposal

Hydro has developed and implemented a new method for the final disposal of bauxite residue (also known as red mud), which the company has been testing at its Mineração Paragominas bauxite mine in the northern state of Pará, Brazil. This pioneering technology, called Tailings Dry Backfill, replaces the need for raising and building new dams used in traditional methods, improving safety and environmental performance.

REMADE Invests in Sustainability and Recycling Research

The REMADE Institute is investing $43 million in new technology research focused on improving the sustainability of manufacturing operations. The institute selected a total of 24 projects to receive funding, including several relevant to the aluminum industry.
Rio Tinto Sells First Batch of Al-Sc Alloy for 3D Printing

Rio Tinto is building a new commercial scale demonstration plant at its RTFT metallurgical complex in Sorel-Tracy, Quebec. When the plant begins operation, it will produce high quality scandium oxide and aluminum-scandium alloys, for which the company has already received its first order.
Vimetco Investing in New Extrusion Line in Romania

Vimetco Extrusion plans to invest €10 million in the installation of an automated extrusion line for the production of value-added aluminum profiles in Romania. The new press line will support the company's objectives, including reducing its impact on the environment.
