What's going on?

Welcome to the inaugural AzSPN Newsletter! We will be sending a monthly newsletter to highlight opportunities in Science Policy, and update you all about what we have been up to.

What have we done?

Last month we hosted our annual Science Day at the Capitol! Dozens of scientists met with legislators to discuss issues facing Arizona. In the afternoons, legislators and science policy experts discussed the need for science policy, and how to do science policy effectively. These webinars will be hosted on our website soon!

Recently, several members met with Senator Sinema's staffers to discuss the need for democracy reform in the US, and asked the Senator to support the For the People Act, a piece of congressional legislation that offers much needed support for a healthy democracy.

What are we looking at?

The Environment Task Force has a letter writing event coming up! Learn more about the Task Force and what they are doing below!

The AzSPN Environmental Task Force is composed of individuals who believe that science should guide environmental policies. While we are open to any Arizona environmental issue, our current focuses are on 1. urban heat and 2. saving Oak Flat from a large-scale, foreign mining operation.

1. Heat exposure in urban areas is becoming increasingly deadly as temperatures continue to rise and the number of people exposed increases due to COVID-19 economic hardships.

2. Oak Flat is located just east of Phoenix and is sacred to the Apache people. This site is also used recreationally by hikers and climbers, but if the land was open to mining, the area would be closed and forever destroyed. For more information on how to support the Oak Flat effort, go to
http://apache-stronghold.com/. We will be hosting another Oak Flat letter writing party, so look out for an invitation in the coming weeks.
