Welcome, March 2021

CEO's Message

You’d have to have been unconscious during the last few weeks not to know about what a terrible place Parliament is for the women who work there. Sexual harassment and assault, workplace discrimination and intimidation…

What we’ve seen from some of our national leaders is fulsome apologies (and the rapid acceptance thereof), tearfulness and statements of contriteness, ‘ I apologise if someone was hurt or upset by my actions. That wasn’t my intention’ responses. Even references to learning about it all from one’s wife and children. And promises to do some workplace change, get people some awareness training…

Problem is, women have been talking about these things for decades. How come the people responsible for workplace culture in Parliament haven’t opened their own eyes earlier?

Why does it take victims of their indifference and voluntary obliviousness going public with the type of terrible stories we’ve been hearing before they feel compelled to address the issues? It’s not like they’d never heard of feminism before. This is willful blindness on an inexcusable scale.

This month, EveryMan workers took part in the #March4Justice to show our support for women across the nation calling on all politicians to address and put an end to gendered violence, misogyny, dangerous workplace cultures and a decades-long systemic failure to deliver genuine equality in politics and the community at large -  we will continue to show our ongoing support for this issue.

National Homelessness Forum- collaborating across sectors to end homelessness across Australia

Homelessness has increased 13.7% in the past five years, and is expected to rise further as a result of impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic. Never has there been a more critical time for Australia to put homelessness at the top of the political agenda.

The National Homelessness Forum will address the key challenges to tackling homelessness in Australia and ensuring that individuals experiencing homelessness are appropriately supported. Delegates will gain tools and strategies to tailor services and wraparound support, improve service delivery and how to develop cross-sector partnerships to streamline services and improve accessibility.

Have you checked out the latest article on our EveryMan blog?

Ten years after a groundbreaking study revealed record-high rates of FASD in outback Australia, researchers have returned to the Kimberley to see how the children are coping in adulthood.

In 2009, a generation of young children were assessed for fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD).

It was found one in eight children had physical and mental impairments linked to their mother's alcohol consumption during pregnancy — one of the highest rates recorded among the handful of studies that have been done.
