April 15, 2021

Brief from the April 15, 2021 Board Meeting

Discussion – Summer Enrichment and 2021-22 School Year:

District 54 will offer a variety of summer enrichment opportunities for students, including STEM Camp, Camp Creative, Instrumental Music, 54 Fitness League and Culture Camps for students enrolled in our dual language and immersion programs. We will also have online opportunities including summer reading lists, the D54 Summer Virtual Learning Academy and self-paced learning materials from Dreambox (math) and Learning A-Z (literacy). In addition, District 54 will offer the Extended School Year summer program for eligible special education students.

The administration also shared its recommendations for the 2021-22 school year, which include a commitment to addressing any learning loss experienced during the pandemic. District 54 will offer an after-school targeted assistance program, as well as small group instruction and acceleration blocks during the day. District 54 is also committed to the social and emotional well-being of our students. We will prioritize a sense of community during the first 15 days of school to create positive environments and focus on relationship building.

Based on the current health and safety guidance from the Illinois State Board of Education and Illinois Department of Public Health, District 54 is planning to open schools on August 16, 2021, with students attending in person five days a week.

However, given the uncertainty surrounding the pandemic and the medical needs of some students or their family members, District 54 is also offering a separate District 54 Virtual Learning Academy next year. Principals will be sending all families an email on Monday with more information about both programs, which asks them to make a selection for their children for next year.

Superintendent’s Report:

Superintendent Andy DuRoss and the School Board all offered words of thanks and praise to Board President Bob Kaplan. Bob chose not to seek re-election to the School Board this spring. They commented on Bob's wisdom, his sense of humor, his ability to collaborate and his leadership during a very difficult year. They used the words "legend," "champion" and "local celebrity" to describe his dedication to this school community as a student, a teacher, a coach, an administrator and a board member.
