Digital Display on 29 April 2021 - International Dance Day

Thanks to those who applied to take part, we're sorry it wasn't possible for all the projects to happen due to time limits on the day. If the day goes well we can look at repeating it with different artists again at a later date subject to funding. The dance artists taking part are Tingting Yang, Macarena Ortuzar (MUE) and Pragna Das. 


Check in and Chat - We're taking a break in April as the steering group is spending a lot of time organising the DD event. If you have ideas of events you'd like us to host in future or feedback on the chats please get in touch. 


Breathing Space at AOFS - We are hoping to be able to give an update soon about when people can start booking space in the Dance Studio again.


ODF MEMBERSHIP

A reminder to all previous members please complete our new membership form if you haven't already.  Our aim with the form is to learn more about our members and your interests so we can design suitable opportunities around you. You should renew your membership to be eligible for forthcoming ODF opportunities. 

When you have completed the membership form and it has been received we can send you our bank details for payment. The annual fee for 2021 will be £20.  Upon receipt we will then send you your membership card. If you are having financial difficulties and are unable to pay at this time please let us know. Read more about ODF membership on our website.

REHEARSAL SPACE IN OXFORD SURVEY

The Old Fire Station is looking at the possibility of taking over a disused building in the city for a fixed-term period, and offering it as rehearsal space. They need to find out what the demand for this would be like.

DANCING THROUGH CRISES RESEARCH PROJECT

Investigating the impacts of Covid19 and Brexit on the freelance dance community, seeking responses to a questionnaire to be completed by 21st April; an opportunity to register the experiences of practitioners on the ground.

SURVEY ON SERVICES TO FREELANCE DANCE PROFESSIONALS   

As part of her DYCP Arts Council England grant and additional support from the Linbury Trust, Assis Carreiro, Freelance Consultant, Director, International Arts and Cultural Projects is undertaking research into 'backroom' support for freelance dance artists/choreographers to gain a better understanding of the needs of freelancers working independently.

This research will inform the viability of developing structured support to dance freelancers and a pilot programme. All information is anonymous and you will not be quoted. Link to questionnaire Here Deadline extended to 19th April 2021

Daily Open Practice with Charlie Morrissey & others

Open Practice is not a class but a space where people can meet (virtually for now) and move together, with camera on or off. These sessions will end on Fri 30 April with a 12 hour marathon of dancing!

Charlie creates an hour long playlist and everyone dances in their own space to the music.

Monday to Friday 9-10am. £2 or a donation to Wainsgate Dances

Digital Dance – Tips and Tricks on Filming, Editing and Broadcasting

Digital Dance workshop series is for all dancers, choreographers and dance teachers who want to make screen dance, teach online or perform virtually. Sessions are on zoom. Drop ins welcome any time. April 22 is the last class. You can apply to receive the zoom recordings if you can't join live. There is a fee but you can negotiate a lower rate if you cannot afford the full price. Find out more

Creating with Care seeks freelance participatory artists and creative practitioners. 

Creating with Care (CWC)  is an award-winning project which delivers a programme of arts and wellbeing interventions for staff, patients and relatives at Community Hospitals across Oxfordshire for Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust. 

CWC is looking for freelance participatory artists and creative practitioners for its programme across 6 Community Hospitals in Abingdon, Bicester, Didcot, Oxford City, Wallingford and Witney.

People Dancing -  Perspectives on Practice

Perspectives on Practice is People Dancing's new online programme of artist-led events and learning opportunities, discussion and debate, networks and spaces to gather, (re)connect and share. 

They are on the lookout for adventurous, innovative, curious ideas that bring unique, imaginative and engaging interventions and interactions that are suitable for online delivery and are aimed at other dance professionals. This could be a workshop, event, discussion (of 1-2hrs) or… over to you…More info Deadline: 19 April 2021

The Place - Stomping Ground

Calling dance artists and movement makers: £20k Stomping Ground commission for outdoor works.

Cowley Road Carnival

We want Oxford's finest - artists, musicians, song-makers, poets, performers, DJS, schools, teachers, community groups and individuals from every corner of the city to sign up and join in.
We want people of all shapes and sizes, ages, ethnicities and backgrounds to come and take part.
We are still making plans for this year's event which will feature live streaming of performance and music from our community-decorated eco floats. More details to come - so watch this space - in the meantime, follow the link to sign up to get involved.

FUNDING SOURCES


Oxford City Council business support during lockdown. 

Oxford City Council Additional Restrictions Grant - This scheme will enable local authorities to pay discretionary grants of up to £2,000 to the following types of business, if eligible:

  • Closed businesses that do not have a rateable value
  • Business which are severely impacted rather than closed

Culture Fund is back! - There will be 3 rounds in 2021/22 starting with

Round 1 is now closed. Applicants will be informed of decisions by Friday 23 April

Round 2 (for projects taking place between 1 September 2021 and 31 March 2022)

  • Wednesday 2 June: Culture Fund opens for applications.
  • Wednesday 30 June, 12 noon: Deadline for applications.
  • Applicants will be informed of decisions by Monday 19 July.

Arts Council England

National Lottery Project Grants - The fund is open to all individual artists, community and cultural organisations to support arts, museums and libraries projects. This fund is now open. They are keen to support first time applicants.

Who can apply: Individual artists and practitioners, community and cultural organisations, museums and libraries.

What you can apply for: Arts, museums and libraries projects that engage people in England with creativity and culture. Key dates: National Lottery Project Grants is open all the time, there are no deadlines. 

Due to high number of applications the turn around time for under £15k grants is now 10 weeks and 16 weeks for over £15K. 

Developing Your Creative Practice (DYCP)

The fund supports creative practitioners thinking of taking their practice to the next stage to research, have time to create new work, travel, training, develop ideas, network or find mentoring. £18 million of National Lottery funding will be awarded between October 2020 to October 2021, over four rounds. 

Funding activity: Research and development opportunities, building new networks, creating new work

Grant range: £2,000 - £10,000

Eligibility: Individual artists and/or creative practitioners. You can find full eligibility criteria in the guidance for applicants. Organisations cannot apply.

Round 9 is closed now, successful applicants will find out by 30 April. Look out for next round launch date.

Dance Professionals FundThe Dancers’ Hardship Fund

Who can apply: Professional dancers. Support given to freelance dancers across genres including ballet, contemporary, Black and Asian dance and hip hop including those with portfolio careers, e.g. choreography, who whose work would normally include employment in the subsidised dance sector. The emergency Arts Council support grants have now ended but you can still apply for support from the Dance Professionals Fund 

Theatre Support Info

In light of the closure of many UK theatres due to the Covid-19 virus, leading theatrical charities have come together to centralise information about how and where you can access support if you work in the theatre industry. ARTIST SUPPORT 


South East Dance

Mind The Gap is a free-to-access programme which helps dance graduates to transition from higher education into the professional dance industry. Piloted in 2018 as a face-to-face programme delivered in partnership with Hofesh Shechter Company, for 2021 they are running the series of support and advice sessions online, allowing many more new graduates to take part. 

Mind the gap will run for 4 months Jan-Apr 2021, next events:
Monday 19 April, 2pm: Professional Class with Amy Morvell
Thursday 22 April, 3pm: Safeguarding Within Dance, with Pip Sayers
Tuesday 27 April, 11am: How to Market Yourself, with Georgina Harris
Fri 30 April, 10am:  Things I Wish I'd Known with Lucy Bennett

Freelance Task Force Dance working group - 

FTF Dance formed an extremely proactive and creative sub-group within the wider Freelance Task Force. They have secured funding for the team until August 2021. Read more on their new website and follow them on facebook or write to danceftf@gmail.com to join the mailing list or to ask a question. 


Equity 

Equity is the trade union for creative practitioners in the UK. You can join / follow the local Oxford Equity Branch and the Equity Dance Network on facebook. 

Nominations for the Equity Dance Committee (and all the other committees) are now open! We strongly encourage all members working within and across the dance sector to stand for election for the next two year committee term. All the information you need is here:  Deadline for nominations is noon 7th May 2021.

Dancers Career Development

Dancers’ Career Development (DCD) offers a holistic and comprehensive range of specialist and confidential career support and retraining services to professional dancers in the United Kingdom.

They are currently hosting a series of online workshops called EVOLVE as well as offering retraining grants. Find out more here


Understory 

Understory is for anyone entering the field of dance, including but not limited to; dance graduates, those who are self-taught and people learning outside of normative structures, at whatever stage in life.

A place for informal honest chat from people who work in dance focusing on the times when they had to navigate the unexpected in their career. 

A collective act of solidarity from speakers of different backgrounds and on different paths, intended to offer some hope, inspiration, tools and humour whilst exploding the myth of a straightforward path through a dance career. 

Understory is artist-led, independent and run voluntarily. Check in each week for new chats! They also have a useful resources page on their website.

Online Talk with Neon Dance - hosted by the Watershed live on you tube at 1pm on Friday 16 April.  Adrienne Hart the Artistic Director of Neon Dance & collaborator Hemma Philamore from University of Bristol's Robotics Lab will be discussing their latest work Prehension Blooms. watch here

Sussex Dance Network - HEAD:ON:COLLABORATIONS Tuesday 20th April 19.30-20.45.

Stuart Waters and Antonia Grove in conversation, discussing issues and themes around pregnancy and motherhood raised within their recent film collaboration ’TONI. 37 weeks’.

This Q & A will begin by screening the film and features special guest Anjali Mehra, independent artist and soon-to-be mum. FREE to attend, you need to register to get the zoom link.
