What's Up In The Hub

What's New?

Greetings from the Hub Team!

We hope you enjoyed and appreciated our programming during Winter Study Week. We engaged in great dialogue and brainstormed ideas during the four-day PD week. Please note that the asynchronous tips and tools are always accessible on our calendar here.

Special thanks to our speakers – Kory Wilson, Dr. Sandeep Puri, and Jessica Pope – who shared amazing insights and tools to consider as we continue to teach and learn. Recordings of those sessions will be available for Cambrian folks soon.

As you may have heard, Grammarly is now available for faculty and students. Any questions regarding how to access or navigate it can hopefully be answered through our resources below. If more information is required, reach out to us directly.

In our Did You Know section, we highlight Etuaptmumk: the Mi'kmaw word for Two-Eyed Seeing. This concept explains how Indigenous people and non-Indigenous people can respectfully work together side-by-side and bring more positive cross-cultural collaboration. It's an eye-opener.

As always, we welcome your input and questions. Let’s march on!

Grammarly
Grammarly is now available to Cambrian faculty and students!  This online tool automatically checks your writing to suggest grammar, spelling, tone and style changes. Follow the link to learn how to install Grammarly Premium.

Also, check out Grammarly’s Tips & Tutorials page for ideas on how to fully utilize this tool.

For example, did you know Grammarly’s writing suggestions can catch the most common grammatical errors that multilingual speakers make in English? Grammarly provides suggestions to French, German, Hindi, Mandarin, and Spanish speakers that are specifically tailored to their primary language. The sidebar will flag cognates, which are words or phrases that have a similar form or sound in one’s primary language but don’t have the same meaning in English. By fixing these errors, Grammarly can help multilingual speakers write more fluently

ALTERNATIVE ASSESSMENT IDEAS:

Tips for Creating Open-Book Online Tests

When testing students online, it can be difficult to maintain academic integrity and to accurately assess student learning. If the course outline includes a test or a final exam, we've created a resource page with some tips that encourage the application of learning rather than simply finding the right answer.

Did You Know? / Try This!

How can Indigenous people and non-Indigenous people respectfully work together side-by-side?

This question is asked through a concept called Two-eyed seeing or Etuaptmumk, introduced by Mi’kmaw Elder Albert Marshall.

Seeing the world with two eyes means seeing the strengths of Indigenous ways of knowing with one eye, and seeing the strengths of Western ways of knowing with the other eye. Seeing both strengths at the same time can lead to more positive cross-cultural collaboration.
