What's going on in the City of Vancouver?

Our Buddings Broadway centre is right next door to the future home of a real live subway station, and if you love trains, and public transportation, as much as a 3 year old boy, you know this is big news.

Demolition begins this week, and is scheduled until Mar. 26. The city website lists changes and impacts on parking, transit, and access to the Buddings block, between Laurel and Oak, on Broadway.

Construction on the block, and a subway tunnelled beneath us, will likely cause some disruption to our lives, for a couple years. Parking enforcement at our back lot has also increased, and we will have the signage replaced, with 2 upstairs spots, as soon as possible.

If you are driving, your best bet will be to enter from the Oak Street side, and use 12th for East/West  travel.

But sustainable transportation is hot right now, and as the days warm up, you might like to try to come by bike! The bikeways on 10th ave, and the Slow Streets, along 8th and 14th are much more family friendly than Broadway at its best. With the construction and demolition - including EXCAVATORS!! - it will be extra noisy between 10am and 3pm...

Meanwhile, on the other side of town...

The empty lots on the corner of Knight and King Edward are up for rezoning, and the city is planning a 12-story Supported Housing project along the Storybook 11'o clock walk route.

Community consultation meetings are happening tonight, tomorrow, and Mar. 18, and if approved, construction would begin in 2022.

The current proposal for 90 studio apartments to address city homelessness will offer program space, dining and laundry facilities, and community input is being sought this week. Check in!
Now, back to our regularly scheduled programming...

Join us in our Save the Environment Challenge!

For the duration of our Zero Waste Spring program, we've been tackling various urban environmental challenges, including reducing our plastic containers, and recycling food pouches. We've been thinking of ways to save water, electricity, and slowing ourselves down on a daily basis, to give ourselves time to connect.

Saving the Environment is our Tuesday theme, but it's also a way of life. Incremental, CONSISTENT change towards safer, less wasteful practices, and age-appropriate expectations are helping us at Buddings tackle climate change. Follow us on Instagram to find out how!

PS, one of our favourite Earth saving activities is our daily "quiet challenge," where we shut off the lights, relax our bodies, and just be...

It takes repetition, but this daily practice builds up. We started with 20 seconds at Storybook, and these days, we're up to almost 3 minutes of calm, quiet rest periods that the preschoolers can draw on to regulate themselves, and "save the environment". ;)

Our online children's stuff swap can help too!

Introducing 2loops.ca!

If you haven't heard already, next week, we're launching our new kids swap platform, so families can donate unneeded children's items (clothes, toys, books, accessories) aged 0 - 6, and use credit to purchase items at our everything-is-$2 swap!

Bring clean, sorted items to 203 - 950 West Broadway, to participate. Or view the video below for more info.
Wondering how a swap can be zero-waste, and zero-contact? Check the video to find out!

Tomorrow is St. Patrick's Day!

Bringing the focus to being green and thinking green, is easier when you're seeing green! Storybook's favourite import - Codie Shiels - is celebrating her native land's favourite day, St. Patrick's Day, so we're all going to dress in green to show our support!

Heading to daycare, but no shamrocks on hand? No problem! We'll paint some faces and gather some clovers on our walk. Join us for colour-coordinated, environmentally-friendly fun, tomorrow, at both centres, and all the other days for the rest of the spring (and forever), at Buddings!
