Our Reopen Plan: First Steps

Session adopted the Reopen Task Force Plan at its March 16 meeting and authorized staff to implement it and report to Session and the congregation on its progress. The Reopen Plan anticipates a growing desire to gather in-person for fellowship, study, and worship as soon as it is deemed safe to do so by health guidelines.  At the same time, we continue to be guided by our commitment to care for the safety of our congregation and wider community.

We’ve coordinated our plan to the State of California COVID-19 Blueprint for a Safer Economy (covid19.ca.gov), which calls for counties to reopen in four colored tiers according to county positivity and transmission rates. Now that Sonoma County has moved to the red tier, we plan to host small gatherings of people (up to 15) at church –outdoors on the church lawn or indoors, in the Freeman Room (113)-- following specific guidelines which include:
  • Social distancing and wearing of face masks
  • Sanitizing protocols
  • Building Entry & Exit protocols
A designated host will be responsible to process the invitation and commitment of participants to follow safety guidelines; and if indoors, monitor room set-up, room ventilation, traffic flow, and sanitation.  Some initial gatherings include:

Adult Discipleship will host a hybrid gathering in the Freeman Room for invited participants for its zoom presentation of Pastor Kent Webber’s class, Issues in Corinth on Monday, March 22. Starting in late April, a class taught by Tim Stafford will follow this same hybrid (live and zoom participants) format.  Gatherings of small groups; such as, the Thursday morning Men’s Bible study group (known as The Hangouts) will begin to meet at church as early as next week.

Following Spring Break (March 22-26), Youth Ministries will meet outdoors, on the church McDonald street lawn – Granite (middle school) on Wednesdays at 3:00 PM and Decade (senior high school) on Sundays at 3:00 PM.

Caring Ministries will host small gatherings of friends for fellowship and encouragement.

Toward the end of April, Children’s Ministries is planning an on-site event on the lawn and Adult Discipleship will host a Connecting Through Nature event.

Should you desire to participate in any of these planned gatherings, please contact the corresponding staff member:  Allie Shoulders (Adult Discipleship), Cory Myers (Youth Ministries), Colleen Soldate (Caring Ministries), or Darcy Fluitt (Children’s Ministries).

We will assess results of these gatherings and plan for future events and activities according to the tier system.  We are also making necessary improvements to our facilities to maximize air quality and optimum health conditions. As soon as we feel it is safe to do so, we will offer in-person worship.

When Jesus tells his followers, “I am the vine and you are the branches,” (John 15:5)  he reveals how our purpose is tied to his.  In the same way a branch generates fruit from being connected to the vine, so are we to produce the kind of fruit that causes people to see Jesus at work in us and present in this world.

Loving is the absorbing and true story of Richard and Mildred Loving, whose 1958 arrest in Virginia for their interracial marriage led to a legal battle in 1963 that resulted in the Supreme Court's historic 1967 decision, Loving v. Virginia, which struck down Virginia's miscegenation law.  Please view the film in advance via Netflix or stream it on Amazon for $3.99.  We also have a few copies of the DVD for those who prefer.  To RSVP to join us and/or arrange a loan of the DVD, contact Allie Shoulders at 707-890-8010 or via email.
