Tauranga Boys' College

Newsletter

26th March 2021
Robert Mangan,  Principal

Dear Parents, Caregivers & Friends of the College

This week has been a very special week for all those involved in representing the college in summer sport, the culmination & highlight of the season.  Over 200 of our boys have represented the college at venues from Tekapo in the South Island to Hunua near Auckland, either at regional, North Island or NZ Secondary School level across 12 different sports.   After the disappointment of cancellation last year, and the uncertainty generated through Covid Alert Levels earlier this term, it is great to have the summer sports tournament week take place.

Our boys have trained hard over the season to represent the college and achieve sporting success.  Further on in this newsletter we report on the success of these teams for the events that have been completed prior to this being published.  This level of representation across a number of different sports further highlights the wide range of sporting opportunities boys have available here at Tauranga Boys' College with the opportunity to compete at the highest level against schools and sportsman from across New Zealand.

We are very proud of the success of Old Boy Peter Burling last week as helmsman of the America's Cup.  His success in retaining the cup has been a motivating factor for our young sportsmen, knowing he sat in the same classroom and assembly hall as they do, then has gone on to achieve huge success on the world stage in his chosen sport.  Reinforcing to them that they also can achieve their sporting potential from the gymnasium, sports fields and playground of Tauranga Boys' College.
The Tānenuiarangi role is awarded to the Aronui Head Student each year with a focus on mana, te reo Māori and standing in te ao Māori amongst his peers.

The 2021 recipient of the Laurie Loper Award is Johnlees Faulkner.  Johnlees was presented with his award at a special Principal's Assembly last week.

Laurence (Laurie) Loper, a Ngāi Tahu kaumātua, was an educator, innovator and visionary.  His passion for education continued long after he retired.  Committed to social justice, his lifelong dream was to effect change in our education system.  A kind and humble man, Matua Laurie made an enormous difference to the lives of others.

Matua Laurie was also a kaumātua for Ngāi Tahu ki Tauranga Moana Taurahere group from 2002 until his passing on May 13, 2019.  The Loper whānau (Suzanne, Brett and Grant) gifted a donation to our group, to be used for education purposes.  It was Uncle Joe Briggs who suggested the money be used to create an award for Tauranga Boys' College, to be awarded to a student who displays the many strong qualities Matua Laurie was known for.

Thank you for your continued support.

Tānenuiarangi - Johnlees Faulkner
SPEECH BY JOHNLEES FAULKNER, 2021 ARONUI HEAD STUDENT

First and foremost I give thanks to our lord Jesus Christ, who by grace and faith we are saved.  John 3:16 for God so loved the world..

I feel extremely humbled and privileged to stand here this morning receiving this honour and of course this responsibility which I take very seriously. I will do my very best to uphold the mana and values of this school, our Aronui whanau, my iwi and hapu and of course toku ake whanau.

I will also like to acknowledge previous head maori student and one of my mates maharaia waaka for holding this position to a high standard and leaving me with big boots to fill.

To me this role is about being a good role model for Ngai Maori and all students. To assist teachers in upholding the values of the school. To guide and be a big brother to my peers and my teina and to always lead by example in everything i do

When I first came to this school as a year 9. I was a pretty normal, nanakia kind of fullah. Not an especially good role model. But it wasn't long before I felt the positive influence of some very awesome people within this school who helped me to realise that I wanted a lot more than just to be a nanakia. One such person was my whanaunga Anaru Paama who inspired me to take up as many opportunities as possible to grow and also to give back to others especially our teina.  And to always be appreciative of any and all opportunities that this school provides.

Tama tu, tama ora, tama noho, tama mate. I was lucky enough in 2018 to be a part of the Tama Tu trip to follow the footsteps of the 28th Maori battalion all over europe.

So boys, young men, Brothers. If I can also impart that pearl of wisdom on to all today, If I can positively influence just one of my brothers here today, then I will feel a great sense of achievement.

To all the teachers and leaders within this school who helped, guided and supported me up to now, I thank you and my whanau thank you. E hara taku toa i te toa taki tahi, he toa taki tini ke.

And finally to my whanau who support me in absolutely everything. Who have high expectations but are gentle and encouraging. Ki a koutou ka tuku aroha mutunga kore.

A, kati ra. Anei he whakatauki hei whakakapi i oku korero,

whai i te iti kahurangi ki te tuohu koutou me he maunga teitei.

No reira tena koutou, tena koutou huri noa i te whare tena tatou katoa.

SPORTS
BOPSS FUTSAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

The 15th of March brought the delayed BOPSS Futsal Champs to Trustpower Arena. With over 300 players and officials, the courts were humming and there was a lot of quality futsal to see.

Tauranga Boys’ College entered two senior and two junior teams into the Champs this year.  For the Senior B and Junior B teams it was a first time experience for many and a great place to see and learn the competitive side of futsal at a high level. Both teams were there with the intent to play top level futsal and take away the title of Bay Champions.

The start of the competitions brought the Junior A team up against Otumoetai Junior A. It was a solid start for the A teams and they took out the game with a 5 - 2 win. After that both the Senior A and B had a match. The Senior B played Te Puke Senior B and our Senior A played Te Puke Senior A. They both won their games with 5 - 0 to the Senior B and 12 - 0 to the Senior A. Next was a junior affair with the Junior A playing Western Heights A, winning 5 - 0 and the Junior B playing Mt College and going down 0 - 3. The next group of games was once again seniors with Senior A playing Western Heights and winning 4 - 1 and the Senior B playing Katikati A and going down 5 - 2.  The next set of games brought the Junior A up against Whakatane and a win 8 - 0 and the Junior B meeting Rotorua Boys’ High and going down 0 - 3.

The Senior B team next met Otumoetai College A who have been working hard towards Nationals and playing some quality Futsal. Otumoetai proved too strong winning that game 2 - 0. Junior B’s next game was against Whakatane Junior B and finally found their pace winning that game with some really good team work 7 - 0. The last of the pool games came down to the Senior A having back to back games against Mt College and John Paul College and won those games 8 - 0 and 4 - 2 respectively and going through top in their pool and into the final against Rotorua Boys’ High who were defending Champions from 2020. The last game for Senior B pool was against Mt College with a 1 - 0 win and were placed well in the middle of the points for the competition. The junior A won their last pool game against Papamoa 1 - 0 and also qualified top in pool to go forward to the final also against Rotorua Boys' High. Junior B played Te Puke in their last game and came away with a solid win 6 - 2 and a middle of the pool placing.

The Junior final was a very close affair with some fantastic and quality futsal from both teams and the final ending in a draw 1 - 1. That brought the game to penalties which Rotorua Boys’ won 3 - 1. A great effort and result for the Junior B, Bay Champs Runner-up’s.
The Senior A entered into a very physical game against Rotorua with a lot of fouls and solid tackles. The game ebbed and flowed but TBC had the opportunities and were in control of about 75% of the possession. Being run on half-size courts it was a great leveller of the game but in the last few minutes Arun Carter slotted a great goal putting TBC in the box seat and on the final whistle TBC won the senior Futsal Bay Championship with a 1-0 win.

Lastly, thank you to the Senior and Junior coaches, Mario Ramos and George Gall, who have done an amazing job of preparing our young men for both the regional and national competitions. We are blessed to have such great knowledge and skills from them.

NZ POWERBOAT NATIONALS

Congratulations to Year 10 student, Cory Lowe on his recent success at the NZ Powerboat Nationals, achieving 3rd place in the NZ 2021 National title for Junior Driver.

In addition to this he also achieved 3rd in the NZ 2021 Junior Driver Series.  This is a series of 4 rounds, which started with the first round in December 2020 at Lake Mangakino, then Lake Taupo and Lake Karapiro, finishing with Lake Rotoiti, South Island.  For Cory to achieve third in both the National title and the Junior series title is a huge achievement, racing consistently with a field of 12 other juniors, all very competitive drivers and boats.

Cory had a goal at the beginning of his season to make it to the podium in one of these titles, to come away with two placings is down to consistent effort throughout this season to improve his driving ability and also his improved organisation prior to racing.

Bay of Plenty Touch Competition

The BOPSS Boys & Girls Touch Competition was held on Tuesday, 16 March. Teams traveled from around the Bay of Plenty to compete in the annual event held for the first time in Whakatane. It was great for TBC to be able to enter two teams.  Our juniors have developed great skills throughout Term One and this showed as their results improved each game. Matua Harawira should be really proud of his team's performance. This is a talented young group and it will be exciting to see them develop into Senior Touch players.  Our Senior Team won every game against some experienced opposition. They beat Rotorua in the final game to win the Boys division.  The final game was very close and the leading team changed several times. The team showed great character to win the game. 6-5. As a group, we look forward to building our program to prepare for the Secondary School Touch Nationals at the end of the year.  Many thanks to all of the supporters and parents.

The images below are of the Tauranga Boys' College Senior Boys playing Rotorua Boys' High School in the final game.

The final results are as follows:

Daniel Earwaker (TBC 2009 - 2013) who shared his experiences after four years of Nursing with a group of interested Senior students.  He is currently working at Tauranga Hospital and is about to join the Theatre team at Grace Hospital.

Thanks also to Cameron Gaualofa, our 'resident barber' who makes himself available in the Future Pathways space when needed for any of his friends wanting to look sharp.
Gateway
Cody Eden, Nitesh Kalura, Ryan York, Lose Sanalio and Bodhi Redwood are completing a work experience placement with Fabworx in Tauriko, a light fabrication business that is growing to a point whereby they need new apprentices. Each student has an engineering task to complete and tour the Tauriko industrial subdivision to see the different types of building construction methods and metal structures used.

Pacific Organics

  • Last week 10 students completed a work experience day with Pacific Organics. Tutors from Pacific Coast Technical Institute showed the boys the food manufacturing industry through experiments and an overview of the huge growth this career path has in our district.

Trades Academy Food Manufacturing

  •  Four students attended their first session on the Food Manufacturing course run by the Pacific Coast Technical Institute. They will attend each Wednesday and  complete the NZ Certificate in Food and Beverage Processing (L2). It is based on ‘Real-life Real time’ food development projects over the course of the year in the Food/Beverage/Nutrition and Health/Medicinal Industry.

SEEDS (Countdown) Programme

REQUESTS FOR HOLIDAYS DURING TERM TIME
I am concerned with the number of requests I receive from parents for time off for their sons during school term to travel in New Zealand for holidays.

I understand the educational value of travel but remind parents to be mindful of the impact time away from the classroom can have on your son's academic achievement.

Of particular concern is when this absence occurs at the same time NCEA internal assessments are planned, as this can have a significant effect on your son's NCEA results.

Ministry of Education regulations only allow me to give permission for absence from school due to illness or family bereavement and advise that all trips / holidays should be taken during official school holiday periods.

I would ask that all requests for leave are sent to me at principal@tbc.school.nz

My preference is for all leave of this nature to occur during the school holidays.  Leave from school for holiday travel that is taken outside of school holiday periods will be recorded as "explained but unjustified".

Thank you for your assistance with this.
