Hello Sloss Community!

The Spring 2021 Semester is over halfway through and we are looking towards spring commencement and summer orientation. Thank you to everyone that attended a Sloss Center talk at the Iowa State Conference on Race and Ethnicity. We appreciated your questions and feedback. We are looking forward to upcoming events and we would like to highlight a few of our own as well as notable campus happenings. Take a look and save the dates!

We have two upcoming Feminist Friday talks. Save the date for Friday, March 26 for a discussion led by Andra Castle, Sloss Center Assistant Director, and for for Friday, April 2 for a discussion led by Emily Miller, Health Promotion Coordinator: Green Dot and Sexual Health. Also, our last Primer on Protest Art for the 2020/2021 Academic Year will be on Tuesday, April 6 featuring a discussion on social media with Helen Barton.

2021 Graduates be sure to check out the Womxn of Colour Network Graduation and the Lavender Graduation and register to have your accomplishments honored through two very special graduation celebrations.

The Writing and Media Center is hosting a three-part-series connecting up-and-coming writers with published authors from across the disciplines. Be sure to check out the WMC website for more information and how to register for these events.

Our staff would like to show our continued support for our Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander community in the wake of a year of extensive harassment and violence including the events that happened in Atlanta. Racist and xenophobic rhetoric, and violence directly oppose efforts for gender equity and social justice in our communities.

Join Monsoon Asian and Pacific Islanders in Solidarity's Campus Advocacy Program for a series of online events for Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April. Check out their Gamer Roundtable for a virtual discussion with Iowa gamers on challenging sexism in gaming culture and sexual violence in gaming communities. Get your team together and sign up for Sex Jeopardy to test what you know about sexual violence and consent.

Follow us on social media for additional campus and community events. We look forward to seeing you all virtually soon!

Feminist Friday

Friday, March 26 at 1:00 pm CST join us for "Cyborgs, Cyberfeminism, and Cyber-corporeality" a Feminist Friday Discussion led by Andra Castle
This discussion is on two foundational cyberfeminist texts, and the social evolution of online interactions that necessitates new discussions and understanding of cyberfeminism. We will discuss the formation of bodies, identities, power dynamics, and systems of oppression in digital spaces and how we navigate the relationship between our physical/digital existences.

Friday, April 2 at 1:00 pm CST join us for "Wearing Jeans: Sexual Assault Awareness Month" a Feminist Friday Discussion led by Emily Miller
Denim Day and Sexual Assault Awareness Month aren’t new. But, like everything this year, our ways of discussing and engaging in these important topics look a little different. During this Feminist Friday, we’ll breakdown the story behind Denim Day and how you can get involved on campus.
