What is Cultural Mapping?

Cultural Asset Mapping is a collaborative process to identify and collect information about a community’s cultural resources (places, facilities, events, organizations etc.). This particular kind of mapping has emerged as an important planning and economic development tool to help cities better understand the value and impact of their cultural assets, and to help integrate them in a city’s plans for economic and community development. Cultural Asset Mapping is often a tailor-made process that fits each city’s unique needs, but commonly includes a mapping exercise that asks community members and stakeholders to define, identify, and map their own cultural assets.

CAMP data can be used to:

  • Promote arts and culture in your area through maps, tours, and guides
  • Discover new connections between local arts groups
  • Identify potential community partners to support your community’s cultural resources

OTHER ADVOCACY NEWS: STATE BUDGET UPDATES

1. Currently, there is $13,069,988 in the budget for tourism, yet none of those appropriations honor our veterans, and only four of the organizations supported are museums - which are an integral part of our tourism goals.  Additionally, while there are many worthy organizations that are receiving the benefit of State funds, the listing of organizations has remained the same year after year, indicating a need to revisit the listing of appropriations. For the very first time, a line item has been proposed to support the West Haven Veterans Museum & Learning Center!  Please contact these members of the Appropriations Committee today if you want to make your voice heard on this proposal.

Representative Toni E. Walker, Co-Chair

2. House Bill 6119 – An Act Concerning Arts, Culture, and Tourism Funding is currently under review by the Joint Committee on Commerce

The bill enables much-needed financial aid to the state's Arts, Culture, and Tourism industries which will benefit Connecticut's economy for years to come. These industries attract new citizens to our state, support the state economy, create new job opportunities, and offer significant mental health benefits to both consumers and providers/artists. Prioritizing investments into Arts, Culture and Tourism will stimulate economic growth throughout our state, cities, and neighborhoods.

Our state is financially reliant upon the revenue from Arts, Culture, and Tourism. These sectors represent 15% of the state's total economy, generating billions of dollars and employing over 175,000 citizens directly. Yet, the funding investment made by the state to sustain these industries only represents a small fraction of the benefits they provide. Arts, Culture, and Tourism were some of the hardest-hit industries by the pandemic. Funding for Arts, Culture, and Tourism should not be looked at as an expense but rather an investment, as statistics have shown that for every $1 invested in Arts, Culture and Tourism the state receives $3 in revenue.  CONTACT YOUR LEGISLATORS
