Weekly Update - March 17

St. Patrick

Today is St. Patrick's Day. Many of us associate this day with the color green, leprechauns, Irish cuisine, and drinking, but its origin is the religious feast day of Patrick, a bishop and missionary to Ireland who died in 461.

Here's a description of Patrick's history: "At sixteen, Patrick was kidnapped by Irish pirates and sold into slavery in Ireland. He himself admitted that up to this point he cared little for God. He escaped after six years, returned to his family in southwest Britain, and began to prepare for ordained ministry. He later returned to Ireland, this time to serve as a bishop and missionary. He made his base in the north of Ireland and from there made many missionary journeys, with much success. In his autobiography he denounced the slave trade, perhaps from his own experience as a slave. Patrick’s famous baptismal hymn to the Trinity, “I Bind unto Myself Today” (ELW 450/LBW 188), can be used as a meditation on Lent’s call to return to our baptism" (Sundaysandseasons.com).

In living out his call as bishop and missionary, Patrick embodied Jesus' Great Commission in Matthew 28: "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age."

As we remember Patrick, we might also give thanks for those who serve as missionaries across the world, sharing the promise and blessing of God's love through their words and actions.

With hope,
Pastor Kerri

Pastor Kerri will pass individually packaged bread and wine (or wafer/grape juice) through your car window, accompanied by a brief communion liturgy.

If you are unable to participate but wish to receive communion, please contact Pastor Kerri for communion to be brought to you at home.

Promise us - weekly discussion questions

Each week this email will include devotions for group discussion that look ahead to the coming Sunday's Hebrew Bible reading. Use them for discussion around the dinner table, individual reflection, or whatever helps you dwell with the text and God's promises found there!

Describe a letter or card from a loved one that you chose to save for a long time.

As we near the end of a series of Lenten readings about covenants, reflect for a moment on promises that have shaped our lives. Why do we make promises to one another?
