March 2021
Thanks to those who participated in our first Meditation with Children Support Network. We had a really good conversation and shared some great ideas, but we decided now, while so much remains uncertain, was not the best time to try to develop the network.
Instead, we will come back to it during the next school year when, hopefully, life will begin to return to normal. In the meantime, thank you for all you do to take care of the children's mental and holistic wellbeing. I know you must feel under enormous pressure to cover as much of the the curriculum as you can but, please, don't undervalue the need for meditation at this time. Right now, children  need more than ever to appreciate their true value. As well as relieving stress and anxiety, meditation awakens their heart to who they really are at the deepest level of their being. It reminds them they are loved for just being themselves.

Our Summer Course for Irish primary teachers will run again this Summer, but this time on Zoom. The program is entitled Mindfulness and Meditation for the Wellbeing of Teachers and Children. The course is subtitled Holistic Wellbeing, Mindful Activities and the Primary Curriculum. While the program will be advertised in due course through Kildare Education Support Centre, it will be open to teachers all over Ireland.
A core aim is to enable teachers to effectively integrate meditation and mindful activities into their own lives and into classroom planning and practice across the curriculum. This highly engaging course will enable you to practice holistic well-being activities across a range of subjects in the primary curriculum for the mutual wellbeing of teacher and child. There will be a specific focus on music, the visual arts, physical education, SPHE and RE to support and enhance learning in the classroom.
The course will provide evidence-based research underpinning these activities and will empower participants to introduce them into their personal lives, classroom and school.  There will be opportunities for journaling, personal reflection and sharing as well as approaches to evaluating the effectiveness of these activities in a whole-school context.

Cora said she loved the peace and quiet of meditation in school:. It just feels like everybody in the whole school is calm. We are all the same and it feels like everybody is happy and relaxed.
Maired (7) said: Sometimes, I go out with my sister at night to look up at the stars. Then we sit on the grass and I hold her hand and we close our eyes and meditate. And it feels to me like it’s God’s hand I’m holding.
David [11] told me: When you meditate you get to see the person inside of you who wants to be released, the person you really want to be. And that makes you want to be like that.
I hope you manage to reintroduce the children to meditation now that you are back in school. Have you asked the children whether they meditated at home during the lockdown and if they found it helpful? I'd love to hear from you about that. Click here  to send me a brief reply. I would love to include a short article in each newslatter based on what teachers tell me about meditation in their classroom - anonamously, unless you want it otherwise!
