A Message from Shelter Tas CEO

Shelter Tas’ Submission to State Budget Process 2021-22
Each year, Shelter Tas is invited make a submission to the Tasmanian Government’s Budget Process on behalf of the housing and homelessness sector. Each year, our submission draws on consultation with all our members across the state, and forms a substantial foundation for our advocacy work.
Last week, we delivered our submission to the Tasmanian Government Budget Process.

The number one recommendation is to increase the supply of social housing to 10% of dwellings.  More affordable homes to rent is the only way to ensure all Tasmanians have the safe, secure, stable and appropriate housing we all need. Housing ends homelessness!

In the longest section of our submission, we advocate for the priorities recommended by our members, to meet the urgent housing and support needs for young people, older people, renters and others, and to fill gaps in regional areas where vital services are lacking.

Our submission also recommends strategic and systemic initiatives, such as modernising the Residential Tenancy Act and aligning the Planning System to ensure they can enable and incentivise the affordable housing that our State desperately needs.

In addition, we call for innovative solutions to address housing need, for example demonstration projects for shop top accommodation, and we call for Housing in all Policies to ensure a cohesive and effective whole of Government approach.

Shelter Tas would like to thank all our members who have contributed to the Budget Submission, especially members of our Policy Committee and Executive Committee who contribute their valuable time and expertise to direct and inform our advocacy on behalf of Tasmania’s housing and homelessness sector, and all Tasmanians who are assisted by these essential services.

We look forward to seeing the State Budget on August 26.

Premier's State of the State Address and release of PESRAC - Final Report 16 March 2021

In this year’s State of the State and Final PESRAC Report, Shelter Tas welcomes the State Government's announcement to develop a broader housing policy framework as recommended by PESRAC.

We hope that when more detail becomes available, the initiatives contained in the State of the State will make substantial improvements to the many Tasmanians facing housing crisis and experiencing homelessness.

We look forward to confirmation that the $10 million Headworks Holiday will prioritise the community housing providers who deliver accommodation for low income earners, and hope the ancillary dwelling payments deliver on the promise of providing accommodation to renters in need of affordable options.

You can find Shelter Tas' summary of the key housing and homelessness of content in the State of the State address and the PESRAC Report.

You can watch the Premier's State of the State address here, or read the transcript here. The full PESRAC report can also be viewed online.
