Earthquakes and Climate Change Threaten California's Dams

Three aging dams in the Southern California area were found to be structurally unsafe and are vulnerable to collapsing, putting millions of people at risk of inundation. Earthquakes have been a long-term threat for the stability of these dams; however, researchers are finding that climate change poses a new hazard for these structures.

In this LA Times article, featuring the Blum Center's Division of Flooding and Poverty Research Lead Brett Sanders, this risk to Southern California is brought to light as engineers and policymakers are gearing up for an emergency plan.

Small Change, Better World: Fall 2020 Recipient Projects
Theory of Joy

"The water and food project will help the indigenous community of Sitio Nilasin have access to clean, sustainable water and nutritious food. Through the Small Change, Better World Grant, the trouble of walking miles to get water will be taken away from the community so students can focus more on their academic ambition." - Erin Araneta
EBT Grocery Haul Series

"My project is an EBT grocery haul series on YouTube. Using a free public platform, I hope to share my knowledge of the program I learned as both a recipient and as a former CalFresh Manager of the UCI FRESH Basic Needs Hub. Knowing the stigmatization of the program and the lack of information accessible for many communities, I aspire to break these barriers for a better future." - Elissa Cobin
Applications for the Spring 2021 round of Small Change, Better World open in April. Learn more and stay updated on our website.

Funding Projects & Nonprofits:
Enroll in University Studies 110

Last week, we interviewed Dr. Victoria Lowerson Bredow, lead of University Studies 110: Philanthropy in the Community. In this course, students direct actual funds to local nonprofit organizations in the context of a full-credit undergraduate course. Students will engage in activities at different levels, hearing from guest speakers (including UCI Blum Center Administrative Director Ruth Gyllenhammer!) and applying terms and concepts to real-world funding situations. In this article, see Victoria's plans and hopes for UNI ST 110 this spring.
