Earthquakes and Climate Change Threaten California's Dams
Three aging dams in the Southern California area were found to be structurally unsafe and are vulnerable to collapsing, putting millions of people at risk of inundation. Earthquakes have been a long-term threat for the stability of these dams; however, researchers are finding that climate change poses a new hazard for these structures.
In this LA Times article, featuring the Blum Center's Division of Flooding and Poverty Research Lead Brett Sanders, this risk to Southern California is brought to light as engineers and policymakers are gearing up for an emergency plan.

Enroll in University Studies 110
Last week, we interviewed Dr. Victoria Lowerson Bredow, lead of University Studies 110: Philanthropy in the Community. In this course, students direct actual funds to local nonprofit organizations in the context of a full-credit undergraduate course. Students will engage in activities at different levels, hearing from guest speakers (including UCI Blum Center Administrative Director Ruth Gyllenhammer!) and applying terms and concepts to real-world funding situations.
