RECENT NEWS
BikeWalk Provo Rides with John Curtis
BikeWalk Provo hosted Representative John Curtis on our "World-famous Bike Tour" around central Provo, highlighting many of the great things he himself was a champion of.

We talked about Provo history and Pete Buttigieg and his promising direction for U.S. Department of Transportation.

We invited John to join the Congressional Bike Caucus, and support Earl Blumenauer's E-BIKE Act (you can support it too! Scroll down to the E-Bike Act to sign the letter). We wish him continued luck in Washington.

Shout out to Hanger 15 Bikes for lending John and Corey e-bikes!
Highlights from 2021 Utah Legislative session
  • S.B. 2 New fiscal year supplement appropriations act passed!
  • $35M one-time funding for “active transportation” paved pedestrian and non-motorized transportation projects (SB2 item 48)
  • $4M one-time funding for outdoor recreation infrastructure development grants that will be allocated through the Office of Outdoor Recreation (SB2 item 210)
  • $1.5M one-time funding for Jordan River improvements (HB3 item 107) and $250,000 ongoing (SB2 item 185)
  • HB142 - Cyclist Traffic Amendments passed! Utah now has a stop as yield law that allows cyclists to treat stop signs as yield signs if NO TRAFFIC or PEDESTRIANS are present.
  • HB 82 Single Family Housing Modification passed! Requiring cities to allow internal ADUs in 2/3 of their residential land area and not require more than one off-street car parking spot. Sadly, it seems Provo City may have have lobbied its way out of this bill. Cities with universities of 10,000 students or more only have to allow ADUs in 1/3 of their residential land area. Virtually nothing will change in Provo from this bill besides a 1-spot decrease in required off-street car parking. We hope to see Provo City politicians work towards legalizing detached and attached ADUs in single-family houses citywide soon.
  • S.B. 15 Workforce Solutions for Air Quality Amendments passed!

As part of a university challenge, Kendall Wilkey (BYU) has put together a short 8-question survey about biking multi-tools. No personal information will be gathered, stored, or used.

The information he hopes to attain will assist him on a project to design and create an 'anti-waste / adaptable' multi-tool. For follow-up purposes, you may contact him at any time:

I Want to Help

Why Volunteer? This is what some of our volunteers have to say about this community:

"I volunteer for BikeWalk Provo because doing so improves everyone’s quality of life by making it safer and more comfortable for people to move around in our community through improving the physical built environment of our public streets."
- Aaron Skabelund

"We all have countless responsibilities trying to take our time. I've volunteered for numerous organizations and am convinced that my time spent with BikeWalk Provo is the most meaningful of them all. We create real change in Provo--on the street, in politics, and in the community. I enjoy spending my time helping make Provo a more livable place to be in."
- Austin Taylor

"I first became integrated into the Provo community as a folk musician, playing shows at Velour and communing with artists and creatives around town. I absolutely love building community through art and music. I think biking is an excellent way to build community, as well as to improve mental and physical health! I’m so grateful for everything BW Provo and other biking organizations in Provo have done to improve awareness and infrastructure here and want to give back in any way I can."
- Emmalie

Support the E-Bike Act

The Electric Bicycle Incentive Kickstart for the Environment (E-BIKE) Act would relieve 30% of the cost (up to $1,500) of a new electric bicycle for consumers.

Electric bicycles have the ability to:
- Displace car trips by keeping people moving with efficiency and ease, no matter their age or physical abilities.
- Reduce carbon emissions to combat climate change
- Keep people moving, active, and connected to their communities

March 17th: Storytelling for active transportation advocates
What we're reading (and you should, too!)
  • Dangerous by Design - Pedestrian deaths are at an all-time high, increasing by 45% between 2010-2019. While cities have been making efforts to increase pedestrian safety, they've also been undermining that with higher speeds, wider roads, and larger vehicles. There is so much work to be done
Thanks for reading. Keep on walking and biking! 🚲
