Welcome to the Streatham & Marlborough Sweep (SMS)

March update

Dear all,

I had hoped to be providing a more substantive update since the Prime Minister set out the roadmap for lifting Covid restrictions a month ago. However, we are still awaiting guidance from the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) as to how this impacts cricket specifically. Initial indications are that we will get a full season but with steps to reduce the Covid threat in a similar way to 2020 (i.e. no changing facilities, BYO teas, plenty of sanitiser). We expect to receive ECB guidance next week and will send a further e-mail dedicated to how we safely return to playing.

In the interim, we have a few updates:
Pavilion Project
This complex project rumbles on... Having been advised to utilise Southwark's pre-planning service, we have been in consultation with Southwark, our nursery partners, and our planning consultants to best position our full application. The key issues relate to scale of the building, the principle of a commercial partner on Metropolitan Open Land, and the additional traffic load on an already busy junction, particularly at pinch points when club and nursery use overlap. At this stage, Southwark have given us positive feedback on the overall scheme subject to TfL approval. We have engaged a specific transport planning consultant and have been working with him to minimise the impact on the junction. At present, this includes the moving of the entrance further West, widening to allow two way traffic flow, and improving and increasing the parking provision - which is a long term goal of the club - in addition to providing facilities for cycling and safer walking routes to the club.

Club Development Plan
We have updated our Club Development Plan. If you are interested our recent successes as well as our plans for 2021 and beyond, please see our latest plan on our website.
CricketForce 2021
It's likely that we will hold a CricketForce style event over the Easter Weekend (2 - 5 April) to get the club ready for the upcoming season. We will remain under Covid restrictions amd expect to have to limit numbers so we will update shortly. But, there's lots to do so we would appreciate your support volunteering some time to assist.
Sponsorship
We are looking for volunteers to source and manage sponsorship opportunities for the club.

We are grateful to have existing relationships with Simon Wright Jewellery (senior sponsor) and Brown Building (junior sponsor), both companies owned by members. However, given the size of the club and prominent location, we believe there is scope to build more commercial relations and there is certainly scope to better manage our current sponsors and perhaps revive lapsed sponsors. We are looking for a small team dedicated to this task, comprising individuals from across the club.

The ultimate goal is to generate additional funds in order to assist the club improve facilities for all members. If you are interested and/or want to know more about what it entails, please contact us.
Grants
In addition to the Sponsorship roles above, we are also looking for a volunteer(s) to lead on opportunities for grant funding which may be applicable to the club.

Grants are available from a wide range of organisations to improve facilities, buy new equipment, increase participation and other initiatives. The obvious project is clearly the practice nets which are in clear need of renovation. The ongoing pavilion project has dominated our focus over the past decade and any available funding in the past has been explored to contribute to a new building. With this funding more secure, we are now in a position to investigate funds for other purposes.

Excluding the grant funding raised for the Pavilion, we have successfully applied for approximately £50,000 worth of grants in the past ten years. The most recent example being £3,000 to part fund a new engine for our Heavy Roller in January. However, there is no official role targeting grants within the Executive Committee and the incumbents are currently lacking capacity to capture the opportunities which exist.
