🐢 Seattle does NOT see the need for speed

Plus: Rubinstein Bagels comes to Capitol Hill.

Welcome to another hump day.

Has your grocery bill gone up this past year? You’re not alone if it did. The pandemic put a halt to the trend of Americans spending more on dining out than groceries. In Seattle, the median amount spent by households on groceries per week increased 25% from last year.

The grocery store with the highest grocery bill? Whole Foods — not that you couldn’t have guessed that. Anyway, this same study showed that compared to the rest of the country, our increase in grocery spending was 10% more than the national average. Whether a penchant for hoarding is to blame, the article is an interesting read

Moving on to today’s news: A number of streets’ speed limits are being reduced, how you can learn to run for office in King County, and all the way at the bottom — where to get some St. Patrick’s Day grub.

What Seattle is talking about

Former Seattle City Council President Bruce Harrell is running for mayor. Harrell spent 12 years on the council and is seen by many as a candidate that business groups are likely to favor. After Mayor Ed Murray resigned after allegations of sexual abuse, Harrell served as interim mayor for a few days before choosing to return to the council and finishing his term. (Crosscut)

  • Related: In other candidacy announcement news, Toshiko Hasegawa announced her candidacy for Port Commissioner, Position 4. Hasegawa is a fourth-generation Seattle resident and is the daughter of state senator Bob Hasegawa. (South Seattle Emerald)

Please slow down. Speed limits on Aurora, Lake City Way, and several other state-owned streets in the city limits are being lowered by 5 mph. In 2019, Mayor Jenny Durkan announced she’d lower speed limits on all city arterials to 25 mph but the streets which the state shares control of required further approval. Find a complete list of the new speed limits here. (The Seattle Times)

A crash course on how to run for office. King County Elections is offering several free workshops on how to file for candidacy in its elections. These workshops, put on by KCE since 2019, are part of an effort to continue the trend of seeing more diverse candidates in county elections. The first workshop was yesterday, but three more will be held in April. (South Seattle Emerald)

Capitol Hill gets another bagel shop. Rubinstein Bagels is set to open in a few months and will join other bagel slingers on the hill — Eltana, Dingfelder’s, Westman’s, and Loxsmith Bagels. (Capitol Hill Seattle Blog)
