Royal News: Issue 86

A MESSAGE FROM THE COMMODORE: MARCH 2021, Part II

For a change I am reporting positive news.
The club has seen families utilising the facilities and seeing grand parents sailing with the whole family off our banks just reminds us what it is all about.

Another birthday party bash saw the club rocking on Saturday evening Happy Birthday Phil Downing and thanks for inviting all your friends to the club. If all our members had their birthdays at the club we would surely become sustainable again.

The heavy downpours the week before did bring masses of pollution into the whole harbour. Our sand bank and waters edge was really unsightly.  Coco from Sea Scouts, Angela Duc from Move 1 Million and scores of volunteers were seen clearing tons of litter out of the harbour. Thank You!! We need to encourage all these initiatives and help where we can.

NAME THE BOAT
The shut down put the final nail into our aged committee boats. Durban Yamaha (Thank You Ryan Hanson) came to the party and donated a 19 monohull craft. We transplanted the best motors and controls and now have a new committee boat. The new boat will be on the lawns when not running races. We are looking for a new name and will have a suggestion box for your ideas. Another excuse to come down to the club. Re naming ceremony will be held after Easter.

I am happy to report members are stepping up and assisting with some of the challenges we are dealing with. Senior members have ensured the continued membership of the ICOYC and we believe that we can sustain this into the future.  It does add prestige to your membership and reciprocal value.
Members have shown interest in the future of the Da Gama clock and are waiting on me to set a date for the meeting. With so much going on it will need to be mid April (TBA).

Our popular Memorial race set to be held next weekend will be held at a later date, to be announced.
This upcoming offshore race, to be held on 28th March, will be a fun-filled le mans start! Further details to be announced next week.

We are not out of the woods but with all this positivity we are strengthening our position every day. Please don’t forget to join the members 100 club and stand a chance to share in the prizes.

Have a Happy Easter and stay safe!

Your Commodore
Leo Kroone

RACE SUPPORT: A CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

With the sailing season going as well as it has been, we've found ourselves in need of a few more helping hands.

At the moment, we're looking for volunteers for race support, either qualified and licensed motor boat skippers or general deck-hands/assistants (training will be provided for those who are eager but do not have any experience).

Volunteers can choose whether to do offshore, bay or Wednesday evening duties. This would be on a rotation basis.

We are not asking for a commitment to every event but to as many or as few as willing to contribute. As they say, many hands make light work!

Enjoy the thrills of watching racing at close range from the safety and comfort of the bridge boat!
