Strawberry Supplies
Ole Tyme Produce is receiving information from our growers and farm operators about the current status of California strawberry supplies. Extensive rain and hail damage is impacting the availability of this commodity.
- Production estimates are expected to be down overall from 15 to 25 percent due to the isolated hail damages in some growing regions.
- We anticipate yield losses may be as high as 50 to 60 percent over the next 2 weeks after which they are expect to slowly improve.
- Even healthy undamaged fields are struggling to obtain optimal production due to the cold temperatures ranging from 34 to 38 degrees overnight and only reaching highs during the day in the mid to high 50s. These temperatures prevent the fruit from maturing normally.
The bottom line is that as a result of these weather issues, the overall shortage is going to adversely affect availability for the next two weeks including Easter Holiday pull.
