This is the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives’ 7th annual survey of child care fees in 37 Canadian cities for children 0-6 in full-time child care centres and regulated family child care. This year a COVID-19 question module was added to learn about the impact of COVID-19 on child care. The survey found substantial drops in enrolment due to COVID-19, while parent fees –which child care services rely upon to meet costs –remain unaffordably high in most cities. The data show strong correlations between reduced enrolment and cities with high parent fees, and with cities with high unemployment. Based on the data, the authors note the survey amplified previous data that show that funding child care operationally, together with setting parent fees– is the best way to make parent fees affordable.
