News from the network

Landscape wide is community wide

We all network 'landscape wide' as neighbours, from Little Muddy Creek
to Wood Bay to work within our wider neighbourhood to:
- build neighbourhood enthusiasm for restoration
- regenerate our native bush through controlling invasive weeds
- create wildlife safe havens through pest control

Your local business are neighbourhood businesses. Do you own / operate a local business and have an interest in supporting local ecological restoration?  If you, or your business supports STNN’s purpose, and would like to contribute, we would love to hear from you.

Using the Trap.nz App

Download the app and help tracking

The STNN started a trial of using trap.nz to track pests that have ben trapped in the area in Spetember 2020. The trial was successful and we have decided to go ahead and use it as our pest control software for STNN.
Trap.nz is a tremendous resource that allows the community to record and track traps success, allowing us to understand which traps are in the area and the bait uptake. By tracking these elements of trapping we can understand which traps are most successful in our neighbourhood. And which pests we have, and how best to trap.

Tracking Cameras

STNN have four new cameras to help trapping!

STNN recently were awarded funding from the Waitākere Ranges Local Board for four trail cameras to help in our bird protection and pest eradication work. Initially we will focus on monitoring our grey faced petrel colony, observing interactions of pests with traps and bait stations and monitoring other areas where there may be pests.
Read More about how these trail cameras will help STNN.

Have you seen these guys?

A request from Little Muddy Creek

Are you a kayaker or paddleboarder on the Little Muddy Creek inlet (specifically south of the Landing Road bridge)? Have you seen a banded rail in the past four months?

Early last year we had two chicks in the vicinity but we have no sightings so far this season. Banded Rail are elusive birds and easiest to spot at high tide when they go to the fringe of the mangroves, most feeding is in the morning and evening, and along the water's edge as the tide recedes. If you see any, please email the time and date to meganfitter@xtra.co.nz - pictures would be the icing on the cake. Thanks!

Bird protection efforts continue

The grey faced petrel chicks have fledged

Continuing our work on monitoring and protecting the grey faced petrels that have a small colony on Okewa Reserve. We now have four birds fledged and we are hopeful they will return to breed and raise their own chicks in the future.
Working with James Russell from Auckland University we have cameras in place to monitor pests and traps nearby.

Working Together
STNN Hub Meetings

Our STNN Hub Meetings happen three times a year and are when our neighbourhood and project co-ordinators come together to keep the big picture alive. These meetings are open to anyone supporting animal pest and invasive weed control across the South Titirangi peninsula.

Get in touch with your neighbourhood co-ordinator if you are interested in attending. They can let you know when the next Hub Meeting is planned.

In Brief

Finding it hard to locate a weed bin? Auckland Council is generally preferring weed bags instead of bins.

Weed bags are cost efficient, and most importantly, composting on site is essential to prevent the spread of Kauri Die Back. We know that only leafy weeds go into them (not bulbs or household rubbish!).

STNN has weed bags available, please let us know if having one will help you out.

Donations

Donations for restoration and engagement projects are welcomed. STNN's bank account number is:
Kiwi Bank 38 9018 0076960 00.
Just let us know if you need a receipt.
