Races and AST Selection Camps

As we move into spring and reflect on what has been a very strange year, I want to thank all athletes for your hard work and dedication to the sport we love. Thank you also to coaches for running programs that have kept athletes engaged and continue to build core fundamentals in this sport.

I know that not having any races in Alberta this year has been hard on all of you, as well on your parents, coaches, and ROC’s. Alberta Alpine has been diligent in applying for exemptions to host races throughout the winter, but we have not had success.  Alberta Health Services has now replied that they will not look at any further exemption requests until we reach Step 4 of their Path Forward Plan, which is set to start April 12 at the earliest.

For those of you in FIS that aspire to qualify for the Alberta Ski Team, please note that selection camps will happen at the end of April. AST coaches will be in contact with your coaches on dates and venues.

Thank you again for all your hard work and dedication, enjoy the warm weather and some fine spring skiing.

Please be safe.

Best regards,

Patrick Gillespie
President of Alberta Alpine Ski Association

I am excited to see what the team and all the young blood can accomplish. Read more.

World Cup Finals Preview

As an unprecedented World Cup season comes to a close, members of the Canadian Ski Teams still have one final challenge, the World Cup Finals.  Canada has strong representation from both our alpine and ski cross teams in Switzerland this year.

To be eligible to compete at the World Cup Finals, members of the Canadian Alpine Ski Team had to be ranked in the top-25 in a given discipline. The Canadian contingent in Lenzerheide, SUI will be made up of six Canadians in six different disciplines. Read more

NCAA Champs Blast Off At Cannon Mountain

For the women, CU had a stellar day, with Canadians Cassidy Gray and Stef Fleckenstein finishing 1-2. The 19-year-old Gray returned to the States in February to pick up a Uni win in Utah, and secure her spot in the NCAA Championships, then trekked back to Europe to compete in the World Championships. She landed back in the states just two nights before this competition, and shook off any jet lag to win the second run and the race. Read more

Tefre, Smart Take NCAA Slalom Crowns

Day 3 of the 2021 NCAA Championships was slalom day, or, what CU coach Richard Rokos calls, “the great equalizer.” The script can rewrite itself in an eye blink, with a hooked tip, a straddle, a rogue rut. Anything can happen to anyone, even in perfect conditions, and the reverse 30 second running order can foster huge moves up the rankings from athletes deep inside the flip. Read more
