Spring Newsletter 2021

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

I Thessalonians 5:16-18

I think even the most difficult things and those that appear to be the most disastrous can become a gateway to something greater. Even if this were not true it is always valid to always give thanks that God is and that we are, regardless of circumstances. This is the hope that rises before us as we look forward to Pascha on the other side of Lent, and also—as Covid is increasingly accommodated to life—to the expected gradual return to normality, albeit an adjusted normality.

The past few months I have been painting a range of panel icons, from the 15cm high icons that many of you ordered after the last Newsletter, to some larger ones. Some of these are illustrated below.

After an expected commission for a large project fell through a few weeks ago my order book is almost empty, I suspect due to Covid. I was therefore wondering, if you felt it appropriate, if you would be able to forward a booklet about my work to whomever you think might be interested—be they layperson, priest or bishop, parish or monastery. Or commission a work yourself! Thank you very much.

Please download the booklet here.

Wishing you blessed Great Lent,

The St Catherine’s Sinai pilgrimage has been rescheduled to 1-8 April 2022 (https://www.windsandstars.co.uk/join-a-group/st-catherine-retreat/).

RECENT WORK

CARVINGS

Since finishing the murals at St Francis, Baddesley Clinton last year, Martin has greatly enjoyed working on carved works. The first project was an altar crucifix and altar frontal (carved in oak and then polychromed and gilded) for the parish of St John the Forerunner in Austin, Texas.

Martin has also recently installed this altar in a gem of a chapel created in the loft of a barn in North Wales. I had previously made the seven-branched candlestick of brass and semi-precious stones as well as painting the icons and designing the iconostasis.
